The company has maintained the core numbers, including two battery versions for about 300 miles or 500 miles of driving range when fully loaded.
The exact battery capacity has never been released, but assuming the expected energy consumption at "less than 2 kWh per mile", we can assume that it must be about 600 kWh and 1,000 kWh depending on the version. The gross combination weight of the Tesla Semi with a fully loaded trailer is 82,000 lbs.
With such a load, the Tesla Semi is promised to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 20 seconds, as well as being able to achieve a highway speed limit at a 5% grade. Those are very important practical measures to smoothly operate the truck - merge safely and keep pace with traffic as well as drive up steep grades.
A new thing appears to be the charging info: up to 70% of range can be replenished in 30 minutes, using "Tesla’s Semi Chargers," which we believe refers to Tesla Megachargers.
Combining the charging time with the estimated battery capacity, we can calculate that the average charging power over a 70% state-of-charge (SOC) window is as high as 840 kW or 1,400 kW. It's pretty high power output.
If Tesla Semi goes into production in 2022, what breakthrough will it bring? Tesla Semi will help fight inflation. The Semi will enter volume production this year in 2022. It'll lower the cost of transport for goods using those trucks, and it'll take competitive demand out of the fuel industry, helping to lower prices for the remaining diesel trucks. Even with 80,000 pounds pulling max gross,
getting 60 miles an hour in 20 seconds.
That's what it can do.
According to analysts,
each semi truck that Tesla effectively has
over 16 times the good impact on the environment
compared to delivering a regular diesel truck.
And it's about 83% cheaper to drive a Tesla semi
than a standard diesel truck.
Recently, Elon Musk has revealed a lot of breakthroughs
and he's newly updating the Tesla semi
to get ready to beat out all the other electric truck.
So what are the Tesla semi breakthroughs?

Tesla's official Instagram account
briefly uploaded an Instagram story
featuring the all electric class A truck
with the caption, Tesla semi ships later this year.
Earlier, Elon Musk stated,
the Tesla 500 mile range semi truck
will start shipping this year, cyber truck next year.
Trucks are, according to Elon Musk,
a big contributor to pollution.
They're large toxic machines that pollute the earth
and the Tesla semi, as Musk puts it, runs on sunlight.
Tesla describes the semi as a beast,
more powerful, more efficient, and fully electric.
Semi is the future of trucking.
So what did the Tesla semi update?
Tesla's just updated its website
related to the Tesla semi, refreshing some of the specs
and releasing new images and new videos.
The first interesting thing is the button
to order and reserve the vehicle has disappeared.
That means they quietly removed the reserve now option
for the semi product page.
We can guess there's two reasons.
Tesla already has a lot of reservations,
maybe four digits worth, and maybe a five digit number,
which could exceed the near term supply.
The other reason might be the necessity to increase price
because the new website does not have pricing info.
Previous prices of regular versions varied
from the $150,000 range for the 300 mile range semi,
and then up to 180,000 for the 500 mile range variant.
The second update for Tesla semi
is that it will now seemingly only boast three motors.
Where before the semi was set
to boast four independent motors,
the current semi product page says,
three independent motors provide instant torque
and unmatched power at any speed
so drivers can merge safely and keep pace with traffic.
The company has maintained the core numbers,
including two battery versions for about 300 miles
or 500 miles of driving range when fully loaded.
The exact battery capacity has never been released,
but assuming the expected energy consumption
at less than two kilowatt hours per mile,
we can assume it must be about 600 kilowatt
and 1,000 kilowatt, depending on which version you like.
The gross combination weight of the Tesla semi
with a fully loaded trailer, 82,000 pounds.
With such a load, the semis promise to accelerate
from zero to 60 in 20 seconds
and be able to achieve a highway speed limit at 5% grade.
Those are very important practical measures
to smoothly operate the truck, merge safely
and keep pace with traffic
and as well driving up steep grades.
A new thing appears to be the charging info.
Up to 70% of range can be replenished
in 30 minutes using Tesla semi chargers,
which we believe refer to Tesla mega chargers.
Combining the charging time
with the estimated battery capacity,
we can calculate the average charging power
over a 70% state of charge or SOC window
is as high as 840 kilowatts or 1,400 kilowatts.
That's pretty high power output.
If the Tesla semi is in production in 2022,
what breakthroughs does that bring?
The Tesla semi will help fight inflation.
The semi will enter volume production this year, 2022.
It'll lower the cost of transportation
for goods using those trucks.
It'll take the competitive demand out of the fuel industry,
helping to lower prices for remaining diesel trucks.
It's a seriously great development
for everyone on multiple fronts.
Tesla mentioned it would save customers $200,000
over three years per vehicle
by switching over from diesel to electric.
Besides, there are many more benefits.
It's always cheaper to charge your electric truck
than to spend money on fuel.
Electric trucks provide businesses with many benefits
that primarily aim for the long run.
It doesn't require fuel,
which is the biggest advantage due to fuel cost
and the effect on nature.
Driving electric trucks will reduce CO2 emissions
and offer better performance for drivers.
While driving in urban areas with frequent stops
and speeding, starting, stopping,
it's way more efficient to have an electric truck
than a diesel truck.
Electric trucks are quieter than diesel trucks,
and you already know that,
but it also means they can operate at times
where a diesel truck cannot.
This is a huge advantage for businesses
as they can easily operate 24-7
and improve their operations and efficiency.
What are the outstanding points of the Tesla Semi?
Well, first, let's look at that Semi's 500 miles of range.
For a trucker, range is a primary concern.
Tesla had addressed range anxiety comprehensively.
500 miles at maximum weight
at highway speeds of 60 miles per hour.
500 miles is a worst case scenario.
The vast majority of routes are under 250 miles.
You can go to your destination even if it has no charging
and you can come back home without recharging.
This, according to Elon Musk.
Approximately 400 miles is the distance
most truckers cover in about eight hours.
And truck drivers are legally required
to take a 30-minute break after eight hours of driving,
according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Meanwhile, fast charging the Semi tri-motor
to 70% takes 30 minutes.
Enough for the driver to take a short break and refresh,
but not unnecessarily long.
Therefore, Tesla Semi will be a great choice
for truck drivers going long distance.
Second, it's price.
The Tesla Semi quad motor cost in U.S. dollars
$150,000 in the 300-mile range
and in U.S. dollars $180,000 in the 500-mile range.
Tesla says diesel trucks are 20% more expensive
in terms of operational cost.
The Semi cost U.S. dollars about $1.26 a mile to operate,
while an average diesel truck cost in U.S. dollars $1.51
per mile.
Tesla said those figures were calculated
using a 100-mile route, 60-mile-per-hour average speed,
an 80,000-pound payload, and with diesel at $2.50 a gallon
and seven cents per kilowatt-hour electricity price.
Finally, the Tesla Semi will use 4680 cells,
at least in one version.
4680 cells give five times the energy,
six times the power, and a 16% higher range
than current cells.
Another area where the Tesla Semi
will break significant ground is safety.
The Tesla Semi is slated to feature
the brand's enhanced autopilot suite of features
as standard.
The range of safety features includes
automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning,
and automatic lane-keeping assist.
And that concludes today's episode.
