Renaissance Nature is a musical exploration of the voice of nature.
It consists of music from the Renaissance era edited by Nenad Leonart and newly composed parts by Silvio Buchmeier as well as live improvised music on the subject of nature and machines. In addition, an installation of an autonomously sounding electric guitar is used. "Renaissance Nature" premiered at the 2021 Nisville International Jazz Festival.

Thematically, this new work revolves around the conflict between nature and industry. It involves the search for origins and possible rebirth.
The live concert was played on August 21st 2021 in the Orgelsaal (Konzertsaal 2) of the ZHdK in Toni-Areal, Zürich.

The project in depth:

The Renaissance was a time of cultural upheaval and the rediscovery of ancient origins. By adapting and reinterpreting the Renaissance repertoire, we want to update the idea of rebirth. For this purpose, organ works by J. P. Sweelinck are used, which in turn break away from a purely mathematical-musical construction of the early Renaissance (prima pratica) and come closer to our modern understanding of music of rhetoric and closeness to language (seconda pratica); we develop this concept further in our arrangements by asking the central question: How do you react when you “wake up” and everything has changed?
We currently live in a world in which the conflict between nature and our industrial exploitation manifests itself in two different crises. On the one hand, climate change is starting to show dramatic effects worldwide and, on the other hand, a pandemic is exacerbated by our networked and fast-moving world.

In “Renaissance Nature”, the nature will appear as a living and breathing being, symbolized by the aerophones, saxophone and organ, that both produce sound through air. Natures conflict with industry and machines is represented by an autonomously sounding electric guitar - a merciless constant: the guitar emits a constant background noise that can be heard through an amplifier. In order to fully integrate these sounds, Silvio Buchmeier composed and arranged new music that fits seamlessly into the Renaissance material and musically illuminates this conflict on various levels.

At the end of the concert, the musicians return to another aspect of early music: in the eyes of the people of the late Renaissance (the first humanists), the whole world is to be seen as the revelation of God. For them, the acoustic echo, as it can be perceived in the mountains, for example, as the literal voice of nature, gains its deeper meaning. It manifests itself in all beings, our environment and, last but not least, in our music; this understanding developed further after the Renaissance and became a genre of its own in the Baroque period. The echo repertoire is said to be the climax of “Renaissance Nature”.

The message of “Renaissance Nature” is that the voice of nature lives and we should listen to it; We cannot survive on a planet whose resources are being mined and exploited. Instead, it is important to nourish and care for this living, breathing being that speaks to us. This message is the culmination of the work "Renaissance Nature" and, as in the Renaissance, is expressed musically through the archetypal echo.
