We have all heard the story of a man and a woman who are inseparable. This story comes from a debate. The two sides of the debate were the great god of the Qi State, Sun Yu Kun, and the speaker of the State of Zhou, Meng Zi. Sun Yu Kun was very outstanding during the period of war. He was a famous god of the Qi State. He was good at dictation, eloquence, and humor. The idioms that we often hear today, such as, 杯盤浪夕,樂極生悲,一鳴驚人, etc., are all related to him. Sun Yu Kun was very knowledgeable, and his memory was particularly strong. He was also good at debating. He often represented the Qi State in public. In diplomatic situations, he did not fail in his mission. He never let the Qi State down, and never humiliated himself. In the history of China, Meng Zi was the first person to mention the virtue of humanity. He believed that the virtue of humanity is like a stream flowing in a low place. It is an indisputable fact. His argument had a great impact on the later generations. The Three-Character Sutra passed down after the Song Dynasty, the first sentence is, the beginning of man is the nature of nature. The Three-Character Sutra later became the current orthodox view. These two intellectuals at the time, one was from a temple, and had the authority to assist the king with his eloquence. The other was a scholar, and traveled around the country to promote virtue, humanity, and morality. Once, Sun Yu Kun asked Meng Zi, is it right for a man and a woman to be inseparable? Meng Zi answered, of course it is right. Sun Yu Kun asked, if a squirrel fell into the water, should a man pull it up with his bare hands? Meng Zi said, if a squirrel fell into the water, if a man didn't pull it up to save it, it would be a disaster. There is a classic saying, a man and a woman are inseparable. The same goes for etiquette, the same goes for virtue, and the same goes for authority. In general, a man and a woman are inseparable. In order to protect the love of husband and wife, there are too many sexual intercourse. A man and a woman cannot have direct contact, whether it is a conversation, or a sale of goods, so as to prevent a man and a woman from fighting each other, messing up each other's names, and causing trouble. However, when it comes to life-threatening events, such as what was said in the debate, if a squirrel fell into the water, and a relative was in danger, a man and a woman should hold hands to save each other. This is a universal principle. The two are not contradictory. So Sun Yu-kun continued to ask, if the whole world fell into the water, a man and a woman should hold hands to save each other. Why? Meng Zi said, if the whole world fell into the water, you should use a rope to save it. If a squirrel fell into the water, you can hold hands to save it. Do you want to hold hands to save the world? The conclusion of this debate is that everything in the world is universal. There is no absolute. If there is a life-threatening emergency, the specific situation must be dealt with in a specific way. If it is too conservative, it may harm people's lives.
