周才美的兒子很懶，不想工作，只知道吃喝玩樂。周才美想讓兒子娶一個賢慧的太太，來幫忙管米店。後來，兒子娶了一個叫馬氏的妻子。馬氏很聰明賢慧，也很善良誠實。
周才美告訴馬氏，他用不公平的秤騙顧客。馬氏聽了，很吃驚。她對周才美說：「善有善報，惡有惡報，這樣做會有惡報，我想離開這個家。」 馬氏建議周才美賣米要給顧客多一點的米，給米農多點錢。 周才美想了又想，決定聽馬氏的話。
從那以後，周才美的米店的生意越來越好了。後來，馬氏生了兩個很賢能的兒子，大家都很喜歡和尊敬他們。
