Welcome to FBNC's May 27 Today's world news
A Ukrainian military intelligence agency reported on May 27 that a UAV operated by the agency had attacked the early warning radar
Veronezh-M in the city of Oks, in Orenburg, Russia, on May 26
According to sources, for the first time since Russia began a full-scale invasion, Ukraine has attacked facilities in Oks, about 1,800 kilometers from the unmanned air defense.
Russian media on May 26 reported that an unmanned aircraft had fallen in the outskirts of Oks, in the province of Novosibirsk, allegedly aimed at a military facility.
No casualties or injuries have been reported.
Military intelligence sources told Kyiv Independent that the consequences of the attack on May 26 are still being clarified.
Sources said that Ukrainian military intelligence also attacked another Veronezh radar in the village of Gluboki, in Krasnodar Krai, on May 23, causing chaos at this facility.
Veronezh radar is an early warning device that helps monitor the airspace from afar, focusing on attacks by ballistic missiles and aircraft.
Its range is up to 6,000 kilometers.
In early May, another Ukrainian long-range UAV attacked the oil refinery Gazprom Nestechim Salavat, in the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia.
The unmanned aircraft, operated by the state security agency, flew 1,500 kilometers to attack the target, a record distance for Ukraine at that time.
In April, Ukraine attacked production facilities in the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia, 1,300 kilometers from the national border.
Spain plans to send Patriot missiles and Leopard tanks to Ukraine in a package of weapons supplies worth 1.13 billion euros, equivalent to 1.23 billion US dollars, announced last month.
On May 27, En Pais newspaper quoted sources as saying that Spain will send dozens of important Patriot air defense missiles to Ukraine and 19 old Leopard 2A4 tanks with other weapons produced by Spain, such as drones and missiles.
En Pais newspaper said that commitments to provide weapons to Ukraine will be announced during the official visit of President Volodymyr Zelensky to Madrid on May 27,
where he will meet Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and King Philip.
On May 26, the CNA Central News Agency of Taiwan reported that on May 24, China's United Shipping Company was sunk in the East China Sea.
Public information shows that the United Shipping Company is a 4,000-ton cargo ship with the task of pulling and retrieving. Officials have not revealed the cause of the sinking.
On May 24, China's Maritime Security Agency announced that the United Shipping Company was sunk at nearly 30 degrees, 44.65 degrees north latitude and 122 degrees, 31.59 degrees east latitude.
This announcement warns all ships to stay away from the United Shipping Company.
The United Shipping Company was sunk near the Chushan northeast coast of Zhejiang province.
The United Shipping Company, which has a total capacity of 4,463 tons, a total length of 85 meters and 23,500 horsepower, has completed technical operations in many waters.
China has conducted military exercises around Taiwan, although the location where the ship was sunk is not within the scope of the exercise, but it still raises the alarm of many netizens.
According to the latest information released by the Ministry of National Defense on May 23, on the same day, China conducted the closest joint military exercise to Taiwan.
The Chinese military sent 49 military aircraft to participate in the exercise, 35 times over the central line, only 24 nautical miles from Taiwan, but did not fire live ammunition.
A U.S. congressional delegation met with the new president of Taiwan, Lai Cheng-deuk, on May 27 to show support, a few days after China held exercises around the island.
The U.S. delegation visited Taiwan, including four members of the Republican Party, two members of the Democratic Party, and was led by Senator Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
Senator Andy Barr, co-chairman of the Taiwan Summit at the U.S. Congress, said Washington was fully committed to supporting Taiwan on a military, diplomatic and economic front.
Mr. McCaul said the U.S. is and will always be a trustworthy partner, and there is no pressure or threat that can slow or stop the regular visits of Congress officials to Taiwan.
Mr. McCaul also said that the weapons that Taiwan ordered last season were transferred, and China's exercises last week emphasized the need to strengthen the island's deterrence capabilities.
Over the past two years, Taiwan has complained about the slowdown in the delivery of U.S. weapons, such as Stinger air defense missiles, when manufacturers focused on supplying Ukraine to counter Russia's invasion.
Mr. McCaul added that Taiwan needs enough weapons to make the Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, see a greater risk than benefit if it invades the island.
According to the Washington officials, Taiwan should focus on maritime weapons such as Harpoon anti-ship missiles to prevent an invasion from neighboring countries.
Mr. McCaul also assured that no matter who wins the U.S. presidential election in November, U.S. support for Taiwan will continue.
German President Lei Cheng met Mr. McCaul at the president's office. Mr. Cheng said he would strengthen national defense capabilities and show the world the determination of the people of Taiwan to defend their homeland.
The Chinese government expressed strong opposition to the visit of the U.S. delegation, saying it weakens the Sino-U.S. relationship and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang expressed concern about what he called restarting relations with Japan and South Korea when he met the leaders of these two countries in the first trilateral talks after four years on Monday, May 27.
Mr. Li met South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Seoul in an effort to restore the three-way free trade agreement talks, which had been delayed since 2019.
At the opening summit, Mr. Li said the meeting was both a start and a new start, and called for a comprehensive resume of cooperation between East Asian economies.
However, he added that for this to happen, politics must be separated from economic and trade issues.
Mr. Li also called for the end of the protectionist ideology and the separation of supply chains. The meeting between Japanese, Chinese and South Korean officials is seen as a sign of progress in the relationship between the three countries.
Lev Eric Eastley, a professor at Ewha University in Seoul, said the three-way summit was aimed at reducing conflict rather than restructuring geopolitics.
China, South Korea and Japan are trying to resolve the loss of trust in each other amid competition between Beijing and Washington, tensions over Taiwan and North Korea's nuclear program.
Leaders also issued joint statements on preparing for the pandemic and protecting the right to intellectual property.
On North Korea, Mr. Yun and Mr. Kishida called on Pyongyang not to launch a missile carrying a space satellite, which they believe uses ballistic missile technology and is prohibited by the UN Security Council resolutions.
Mr. Lee called on all parties to contain and prevent a more complex situation on the Korean peninsula, but did not mention the satellite.
China is the only military ally of North Korea, the country's largest trading partner, and with Russia, has called for easing the UN sanctions on North Korea.
Trade relations between China, South Korea and Japan have developed over the past decade and are increasingly competitive.
But those relations have been further challenged by the United States calling on its allies to transfer important products such as semiconductors out of China.
Mr. Yun said the leaders agreed to build a transparent supply chain and trade environment that can be predicted, but not detailed.
Leaders also attended a forum with the top business executives of the three countries.
They noted that cooperation has not achieved potential due to global challenges, but agreed that industries will cooperate to support trade and stabilize the supply chain.
Expert Ashley said the relationship would advance further if China allowed Japanese and South Korean diplomats in Beijing to get better access and improve the business environment for foreign companies.
On May 27, the Papua New Guinea National Disaster Center said more than 2,000 people were buried in a large earthquake in the country last week.
On May 26, a UN agency estimated that more than 670 people were killed. The National Disaster Center increased the number of deaths to 2,000 in a report sent to the United Nations on the same day.
The AFP news agency on May 27 cited a report by the Papua New Guinea authorities that the earthquake destroyed many houses and orchards, seriously affecting the highway.
In the morning of May 24, the earthquake hit the village of Kao Kalam, in the province of Nga, about 600 km from the capital Pok Moros Bay, while families were sleeping.
