1976年，佛光山創始人星雲法師代表台灣佛教團體參加美國建國兩百週年慶典。星雲法師受美國友人的邀請，希望在美國興建一座寺院。於是，佛光山委託慈莊法師（寺院創立之初，她便成為西來寺的創始人和首任住持）和易衡法師負責規劃和組織在大洛杉磯地區興建西來寺。它以“國際佛教進步協會”的名義在加利福尼亞州正式註冊成立。
西來寺自開幕以來，便舉辦了多項重大活動。 11月19日至26日，世界佛教徒聯誼會第十六屆大會和世界佛教青年聯誼會第七屆大會在此舉行；為期一個多月的國際僧侶三台受戒儀式也在此舉行；此外，寺廟開幕前還舉行了水鹿發會。

The Hsi Lai Buddhist Temple, located in Hacienda Heights near Los Angeles, in Southern California, is a serene and culturally rich destination that offers a glimpse into the world of Buddhism. With its ornate architecture, peaceful atmosphere, and engaging cultural experiences, the temple welcomes visitors to explore its grounds and learn about the teachings of Buddhism.
In 1976, Master Hsing Yun, the founder of the order, represented a Buddhist group from Taiwan to participate in America's bicentennial celebration. Master Hsing Yun was asked by American friends to build a monastery in the United States. Therefore, Fo Guang Shan asked the Venerable Tzu Chuang (who, upon the inception of the temple, became the founding and first abbess of Hsi Lai Temple) and Yi Heng to plan and organize the construction of the temple in the Greater Los Angeles area. It was officially chartered in the state of California under the name of International Buddhist Progress Society.
Immediately after its opening, Hsi Lai Temple was the venue of many major events. The 16th General Conference of the World Fellowship of Buddhists and the 7th conference of the World Fellowship of Buddhist Youth were held from November 19 to 26, an international Triple Platform Full Ordination Ceremony for monastics was held for over a month, and a Shuilu Fahui ceremony was held prior to the temple's opening.
The temple is a magnificent architectural marvel, drawing inspiration from traditional Chinese Tang dynasty designs. Intricate carvings, vibrant paintings, and elegant pagodas adorn the temple's buildings and courtyards. As you wander through its halls, you'll encounter statues of Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and other revered figures, each meticulously crafted to convey the essence of Buddhist teachings.
