Ladies and gentlemen, more than 3000 years ago, across the turbulent lands of the ancient Near
East, a pall of draught fell over the army of Israel. Facing the front lines, the Philistine
giant Goliath bellowed continuous taunts, yet for 40 days and nights, not a single champion
dared step forward in defiance. Amidst this tense standoff, a young shepherd boy named David spoke,
I will fight Goliath. His elder brothers reacted with anger, dismissing the notion that he could
ever prevail. Unfazed, the youth held firm in his conviction. Gathering five smooth stones
and his familiar sling, he walked steadily toward the giant. Seeing a slender youth step forward to
challenge him, Goliath laughed in derision at such audacity. Calmly, David declared,
The Lord is with me. With full force, he hurled a stone directly into Goliath's forehead.
Upon witnessing their champion fall, the Philistines scattered in disarray. The young
boy became the hero of Israel and ultimately its beloved King David.
2,000 years later, standing before the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Michelangelo gave the same
divine conviction form in a block of marble. Carving the monumental masterpiece of David,
an eternal pinnacle of artistic triumph transcending time. Distinguished guest,
art is at its heart a crystallization of the human intellect. Yet tracing back through the
currents of history, its origin has always been inextricably linked with sacred faith.
In antiquity, reverent devotion of the divine transcended worldly emotion,
serving as the purest inspiration for mankind to sing, to dance, and to depict the majesty
of the Creator. Whether in the East or the West, the millennia of human history are no
sequence of random events, but a grand tapestry woven through the course of human history.
Where the Ancient East left its imprint through successive dynasties,
each marked by its own sovereign, its colors, and its distinct attire,
the West traversed its own brilliant epochs, from Greco-Roman antiquity to the Renaissance
and the Baroque. Every era that descended upon the earth brought forth a unique architectural
heritage, a distinct literary canon, and a singular musical tradition. The ancients did
not regard music as mere fleeting entertainment or an ephemeral outburst of earthly emotion.
Rather, music served as a mirror reflecting the essence of culture,
intertwined with ritual, morality, and the sacred order of the cosmos.
From this shared foundation, each civilization composed a song imbued with its own distinct
timbre. In the East, sages employed ritual to stabilize society and music to cultivate
inner harmony, guiding the human spirit towards its original nature through the quiet music
of the zither beside winding streams or the quiet melodies of the recluse.
In the West, beneath the soaring vault of ancient cathedrals, sacred hymns resonated
as solemn prayers, directing the heart in devout devotion toward the Creator.
Today, within the realm of Thousand-Year Dream, we invite you to journey back through time to
explore how music has elevated the human soul toward noble realms. And perhaps, within a certain
melody, you may rediscover a deep, resonant memory within your own spirit. Welcome to Thousand-Year
Dream, Episode 6, East-West Symphony.
Distinguished guests, beyond its sacred mission to offer praise to the divine,
traditional art and music have fulfilled another pivotal role, utilizing the backdrop of nature
to convey profound philosophical truth. While Eastern and Western traditions develop through
very different artistic languages, both often turn to nature as a means of expressing what
lies beyond the visible world. Western music, from the Renaissance onward strove for structural
perfection, capturing objective, refined, and vivid beauty. Despite differences in technique
and instrumentation throughout pre-industrial history, the finest musical tradition of both
East and West maintained a luminous melody at its core, dedicated to preserving the
goodness of human nature and fundamental moral values. Looking back across time,
history bears witness to moments when dynasties collapsed, morality declined,
and humanity strayed from the divine toward ruin. At these profound turning points,
artists and composers of noble character embedded priceless historical lessons
into enduring compositions, transforming sound into a powerful call to awaken and uplift the
human spirit across generations. The clearest testament to this spirit in the East is the legacy
surrounding the masterpiece Lian Ding Ji Shi, prefaced the poems collected from the Orchid
Pavilion, the timeless inspiration behind the instrumental piece The Orchid Pavilion Suite.
In the spring of the year 3053 AD, forty-one scholars gathered along the winding streams
of Guai Ji, surrounded by serene bamboo groves and lofty mountains. They floated wine cups down
the stream, recited poetry, and contemplated the impermanence of existence. Elevated by fine wine
and a transcended state of mind, Wang Xi Qu set brush to paper to record the verses of that
legendary gathering. With calligraphy described as dragon soaring and swans alighting,
his effortless prose achieved the pinnacle of the craft, celebrated as the number one
running script under heaven. Tradition holds that after sobering up, Wang Xi Qu attempted
to recreate the manuscript hundreds of times, yet could never reproduce its original spirit.
It was not merely a display of technique, but a moment in which a display of physical technique
but a moment when the mind of a Taoist cultivator merged completely with the cosmos, reflecting the
ultimate purity and nobility of spirit. Please listen now to the instrumental composition
The Orchid Pavilion Suite, composed by Min Ka. Allow yourself to relax into these ethereal,
classical melodies as the tranquil sounds of nature guide your mind through the ancient lands
of Kuai Chi, cleansing worldly worries and connecting you to the pure moral current that flows through generations.
Distinguished guests, over 2,000 years ago, Neo-Babylonian empire rose to breathtaking magnificence.
King Nebuchadnezzar, after plundering the lands of Judea and seizing vast treasures, succumbed
to pride, throwing the steadfast into fury furnace and equating himself with God. Despite
prophetic warnings, his hubris caused him seven years of madness, living like a wild beast in the
wilderness. Yet this lesson went unheeded by subsequent generations. By the reign of King
Belshazzar, moral decay reached its zenith when the king used sacred silver and gold vessels
plundered from the holy temple to an extravagant feast. During the night of indulgence,
a mystical hand appeared, writing upon the wall the prophecy of imminent doom.
That very night, Belshazzar was slain, and the Neo-Babylonian empire fell that very night.
These monumental lessons of history were preserved not only in text, but also served
as profound inspiration for the masters of classical music. Across the centuries, musical
geniuses such as Johann Sebastian Bach, George Friedrich Handel, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
conveyed this timeless warning through solemn choral works and sacred hymns.
Earthly indulgence is fleeting. Divine judgment is the ultimate destiny of the soul.
Those who remain humble, self-aware, and virtuous shall be blessed, while the arrogant,
tyrannical, and corrupt must face retribution. From the same spiritual reservoir,
devotional melodies honoring the Virgin Mary become a sanctuary for the human soul,
lifting the soul above life's thorns and arrogance back to a state of pristine faith.
Continuing our program, we invite you into the timeless arrangement based on the famous
intermezzo from Pietro Mascagni's opera, Cavalleria Rusticana, with lyrics by Piero
Mazzoni. Please enjoy Affe Maria, performed by Sastrani.
Ladies and gentlemen, Thomas Jefferson, one of the founding fathers of the United States,
once reflected on God as the highest expression of virtue and beauty that humanity can aspire
to achieve, whether in the West or the East. Through the teachings of Christianity, Buddhism,
or Taoism, ancient beliefs guided humanity according to pure moral standards.
Before modern civilization gained dominance, people held steadfast faith in the divine
and the heavenly realms, using divinely bestowed principles to discipline their character,
revere the cosmos, and cultivate goodness. It was within this context that authentic art emerged,
not to depict darkness or distortion, but to awaken the luminous, benevolent energy of divine nature
and elevate human morality. Throughout history, people have admired the serene, unburdened realm
of the immortals. Yet amid the clamor of the modern world, where fame and gain cloud the mind,
and good is confused with evil, how many truly realize this? Divine salvation does not reside
in remote temples or deep forests, but exists right here among us, carried by those who quietly
spread the righteous way and sow seeds of kindness. Recognizing this truth and maintaining
faith in goodness is the greatest blessing for any living soul. Next in our program,
please join us in listening to the song, Who Truly Knows the Blessings of the Immortals,
performed by Nu Tui.
Music
Ladies and gentlemen, an artistic journey now draws to a close.
From the winding waters of the Arcade Pavilion, where the music invites us into inner stillness,
to the solemn notes of Ave Maria, where the soul reaches toward the divine. And finally,
into the reflection upon conscious in Who Truly Knows the Blessings of the Immortals,
three musical realms, three distinct expressions, yet beneath them all lies an eternal aspiration,
mankind's enduring desire to return to beauty, goodness, and values higher than ourselves.
The stream of divinely inspired music continues to flow across dynasties,
cleansing the soul and guiding humanity through the turbulence of time. Music can carry us across
thousands of years of history, from ancient eastern rivers to western cathedrals. Yet sometimes,
the longest and most meaningful journey is the one that returns us to the pure,
original nature within our own hearts. In today's world, amid increasing noise and destruction,
perhaps we need quiet moments to listen more than ever. To listen to a pure melody,
to listen to nature, to listen to those beside us. And deeper still, to listen to the voice
of conscience. For some sounds resonate only in the ears, while others can only be felt by a
tranquil soul. When we learn to listen to pure harmonies, preserve inner nobility, and align
our hearts with goodness, we awaken the pristine, divine nature within ourselves.
Thank you for joining us on Thousand-Year Dream Episode 6, East-West Symphony. May you always
preserve a place of peace within your heart, a steadfast faith in goodness, and the clarity
to discern eternal values amidst a changing world. Goodbye, and we look forward to welcoming you on
our next journey.
