Did you hear what the brightest stars on the Star of the Seas cruise ship said?
海洋星際號遊輪: 星光熠熠 | 時空瀑布 AquaTheater
你聽到了海洋星際號遊輪上最明亮的那些星星們說了些什麼嗎?
Good morning everybody. Happy Halloween everyone. How are we doing?
I love how people have got dressed up for the entire day. I absolutely love it. You
sir look amazing this morning. Absolutely fantastic. Well welcome everybody to Starstruck. This is a
great session where you get to get a little bit of insight into our performers and their life here
on board the Star of the Seas. How many of you have seen all the shows so far this week?
Round of applause if you've seen Back to the Future, the musical. Our production in here,
Talk. Amazing. And down at Absolute Zero we've also seen Soul this week. A few performances so
far. Fabulous, fabulous. And we've still got a couple more coming up. In fact tonight in the
Royal Theatre, our second show for this incredible cast down there, the Royal Theatre cast, that is
called Create. So that's coming up at 8 and 10, 15 tonight. And then also tomorrow another little
show in here as well. So do look out for that in the program Pirates and Mermaids. But lots of fun
still to be had right here on board this incredible ship everybody. And we thought we'd give you an
opportunity to ask some questions this morning. So if you are ready for it everybody, shall we of
course bring out our stars from the Star of the Seas? Yes? Let's bring them out. Come on guys.
Fabulous team here this morning from all of our different areas here on board. The Star of the
Seas. All right. Lovely, lovely. All right we'll start. We're going to introduce everyone so you
know who they are, what they do, and maybe how long they've been performing with Royal Caribbean.
So let's start down there with the lovely lady this morning. Good morning. Hello everyone.
My name is Eve. I'm a dancer in the Aqua Show and I'm also the Aqua Captain. This is my 11th
contract with Royal Caribbean. And yeah, hi. Where are you from Eve? I'm from the UK. Lovely.
All right next along. Hi everyone. My name is Thomas. I'm from France and I'm the Ice Captain
and also this is my 14th year with Royal Caribbean.
Good morning everyone. My name is Jack. I'm also from the UK. Any Brits?
And I'm the Stage and Production Manager of the Royal Theatres.
I'm currently based out in New York City. Fantastic. Welcome to all of you. For those of
you that may not know who I am, I'm Chris, the Cruise Director. I oversee the entire
entertainment program and product here on board the Star of the Seas with our 280
entertainment team members here, making sure that you have the best entertainment product as
possible. I've been with Royal Caribbean since 2010 and it's my pleasure to be here on Star
of the Seas with you. So thank you very much for coming along this morning everyone.
But I look down the end there this morning everybody, I see an empty chair and a dog bed.
So we're missing someone, aren't we? Yeah. Possibly the biggest star of us all, ladies
and gentlemen, Sailor and her Chief of Staff Vicky. I think that was the biggest cheer for
Sailor bigger than all of us put together. We could sit here for 45 minutes and just watch
the dogs and they would all be so happy. Look at all the cameras out this morning everybody.
Good morning Vicky. I do have that question to speak nice and loudly into the microphone for us
so we can hear the question and we will hopefully be able to answer it for you. So
first question this morning right there in front. Hi, my question is for Eve. How do you get over
performance and my daughter is in dance and she gets a little nervous so I would love any
information or tips you can share. How do you get over nerves? It takes a long time but also when
you're on a stage like this with so many lights, a lot of the time you can't even see the audience
unless you're sat at the front in a giraffe costume like you are. But I think we practice
so much and it comes to a point where it becomes second nature and dancing and performing is what
we do as a job and it becomes second nature. We want a big audience, we want a big crowd and we
want to hear the audience applaud for the show. I think advice would be to believe in yourself
and then you'll always be confident in what you do. And being nervous is good I would say. Now
if you weren't nervous it means you don't care. Even though I'm not on stage, I'm nervous before
every show so use that. The good nerves. Thank you very much. All right question over here with Keith.
Good morning. Good morning. Is Taylor ever on leash and just run and get the zoomies?
Thank you for your question. In guest areas it's very special that she's on leash because
people are allergic, we want to make sure she's not eating in the windjammer
because if I did take her off that's where she would be or actually in the steakhouse at the top
yeah she's had a couple of steaks from there by mistake but yeah in career areas it's very
special and she has the privilege of you know being off leash where it's necessary in the bridge
she has a place up there where she can stay and the captain loves her. He's called my
deaf phone twice today already wanting cuddles later so she has a space up there where she can
be off leash and then of course we have two days a week where she gets land time, a dog park on
turnaround day so she gets to interact with other dogs. There's like eight of us that go now
and hang out and then Coco K is a beach day. She's got her own beach, she swims for four hours,
she jumps off piers, it's great so she's living her best dog life for sure but thank you for
lovely all right back over here with Regina this morning. How old is she and where does she live
off the ship? Sailor right yeah because me I'm 32 now um so Sailor's just turned eight months
so she's still a baby um she's a big baby for sure she's gonna be like 120 pounds fully grown
um but she lives on the ship this is her residency now so she lives here this is this is it
um until she retires and then I think the CEO will have something to say about where she lives
afterwards. If not in his house it's going to be very close for sure but she's from Florida
she was born in Fort Lauderdale. Thank you all right back over here with Keith over this side
good morning buddy. What was it like being with the Royal Caribbean for all these many years?
Just say that one more time buddy. What was it like being with the Royal Caribbean for all these
years? Oh what's it been like to be with Royal Caribbean for all these years and living at sea?
Well it's been pretty amazing for many of us that have that live at sea for a majority of the year
we get to see some incredible places around the world and we get to travel where the ships take
us we we don't just sail around here in the Caribbean we get to go to Europe and over to
Asia and parts of the Middle East and down to Australia and New Zealand, Alaska and all different
parts of Canada as well so we get to see a lot of different places but on board we have a pretty
good time we have a lot of different crew activities and crew areas which we get to take
advantage of as well um so we do a lot of things and have a lot of activities just like our guests
here on board so we spend anywhere from around four to eight months at sea at any given time
and then the best thing is we get to go home and have a huge long vacation and do whatever we like
there as well so it's great that we get to make people's vacation experiences as incredible it
can be. If anyone wants to add there what's life at sea like? Pretty good. We get to save a lot of
money too. Fantastic we'll send you the career paper all right perfect questions all right back
over here with Regina. This is an ice skating question what's it like um with the acrobatic
ramps in the show how like does it make you nervous? No I trust my uh my cast no they their
background is rollerblading so excuse me so they practice their whole life uh all these tricks uh
on the ramps on land and then they um some of them learn how to skate for um a show on Cirque du Soleil
which had that special act and then other people had done hockey before so they also have a skating
background so they kind of combine both of these skills together and came out with this uh
wonderful and exciting trick uh act but um no they're I mean they do crazy crazy crazy things
and they practice every day with um they have the ramps and they have mats on the floor so they learn
all the mats first uh to uh develop your tricks um but the tricks they do in the show are tricks
that they can perform constantly and safely. Thank you. Where does the dog live and sleep?
Where does Sailor live and sleep? In Florida no she lives here she lives here she lives on
Neptune and she actually has a very bougie stateroom yeah the best crew cabin on the ship
other than the captains for sure we have two windows
she has a living room yeah um three beds yeah and she sleeps here for sure.
All right next question up with Regina. Um this is a question for Doc. How long did it take for you
to study his actual voice in the movie? Um well I in the show I'm trying only kind of to touch on
Christopher Lloyd's voice in the 1980s sections because if I did it for the whole show I wouldn't
be able to sing um but it was just I I watched the movie quite a bit growing up and I watched it
about twice or once before we started rehearsals and once during rehearsals and that was enough
to kind of get a feel for it a general feel and I figured whatever I remembered from that would be
enough to satisfy what the audience needs of a Christopher Lloyd touch to it um but a lot of my
my assignment was really to find my own doc and kind of make my own doc but I did want to use
Christopher Lloyd as a bit of a touchstone. Great questions all right next along back to the front
I just want to say we saw Back to the Future on Broadway this production is Santa related to
Rover? Good question um they're from the same breeder so I believe in some fashion they probably
have the same parents or same dad or same mom um but they're two years apart so Rover's just turned
two and she's eight months so they're like in some fashion like sisters um sisters at sea
yeah her bloodline is the airboat dog so she's gonna be playing basketball sometime soon I feel
like thank you all right when in the aqua show or ice shows um wherever in the olympics or
competitions yeah um we have two synchronized swimmers one that went to the rio olympics
oh both went to rio olympics and we have two divers that have we have so many world champion
european champion national champions that like the the titles of this cast are ongoing well
slackline championships the boat world championships of world champions of slackline
of the brothers that do slackline but yeah so we have so much talent and I'm sure the same
yeah same we have a ton of people that went to worlds and europeans and national champions
we don't have olympians in this specific cast but we have a lot of olympians in the peninsula
very talented uh team members in all of our casts absolutely incredible in
in all their fields all right down the front here again with keith good morning
hey good morning uh for back to the future uh we started rehearsals may 27th uh and we joined
the ship in turku july 1st we had a couple weeks off and then got back into rehearsals
the create cast started rehearsals april 20th uh so me and marty joined them a month later
and uh we're we're on board till april 19th so yeah for ice it was pretty similar we started
rehearsals to create the show may 26th and then we joined july 1st in toku and we kept
practicing for about a month and a half before we opened to yes and then otherwise on on regular
weeks we do ongoing rehearsals to continue to practice and perfect uh all the elements in the
show and uh yeah so it's about we do all the skaters practice uh 30 minutes each before the
show every every show day and then we do group rehearsals probably about twice a week and then
as ice captain i also review all the shows after every single show and i give uh notes and feedback
in the next show day um and we can um we can adjust a lot of formations and synchronization
like you said by just the notes and then i do a lot of video notes as well so that they can
actually see it we do a lot of the same and we uh you mentioned the studios in miami where we
train before we come to the ship and the aquacast we do the same thing it's a little difficult
because we don't have a pool and so we do a lot of fake swimming and so it's like you're going to
swim over there underwater and you're going to swim over there but um yeah we go to pools in
and in miami to train for the divers and all of those kind of things and when we come on board
we finally get to incorporate it all with the venue and and yeah weekly daily we do uh there's
a lot of nerves a lot of it goes in behind the scenes to make sure it's perfect changing people
in and out taking people out who are sick or injured and yeah we do there's a lot a lot of
little touches that make it what it is yeah thank you thank you very much sir all right
back up the back there with the regina good morning hello a wonderful job with all the
entertainment but i have a question about background education and training for your
respective field um i started acting when i was about six or seven years old because my piano
teacher was a music director so i started at a young age i got a bfa in musical theater from
the university of oklahoma and i've been pretty much working professionally ever since i think
i've had a total of maybe three years of my life that i've worked outside of the entertainment
industry i started skating at seven year old seven years old and i did the entire
competition uh route i was french national champion in skating and then um thank you
and then i 18 years old i always knew personally that i loved shows more than uh the competition
aspect of the sport so i 18 years old as soon as i could i decided to join royal caribbean
and i'm 33 now so it's been a very long time and i also worked with disney on ice and
holiday on ice in europe and Cirque du Soleil as well so i yeah i'm very fortunate that i got to
explore different companies and but i'm always coming back to home where i'm here with royal
and i was a gymnast i did artistic gymnastics from being very young and then
went into sports acrobatics i then went over and trained in musical theater at a well-renowned
college in london and then started to audition for a lot of different jobs and i actually
auditioned for musical theater for royal caribbean and and then decided to come over
my way up and here i am now so yeah just kind of landed here i love it
it's hard work but i really enjoy it so good question um i've been with royal for nine years
now i was a sports staff before so the people that are at the top deck doing the crown's edge rock
um when this job came up who wouldn't like come on um and i was very adamant that i was
i wanted this job so i actually inboxed michael bailey on every platform possible so his facebook
his instagram his email um and i quote on quote said hi michael you don't know me personally but
you will and i sent him an application video we have a pet hotel at home that's my profession when
i'm not looking after one dog on a ship i look after 300 at home um and it just seemed like
the right progression and i got a response in four hours so and 10 months later i'm here
good morning um first i want to thank you for spending some time with us last night and chatting
it up but i have two questions one's for eve and one's for the entire team eve did anyone need to
learn to swim um before doing this uh the tour and then for the entire team i you guys work
incredibly hard and we were spacing out the time between shows and i was like oh not too bad they
do a show then they get a day of rest but then i see similar faces on the ship so do you guys have
other duties outside of what we see you on the main stage and if so what are they um we now
royal now when you submit to be in the aqua show you have to send in a video of you doing certain
swimming skills so a few lengths you have to be able to tread water for five minutes and showing
yourself climbing out of the pool that's something that a lot of dancers that come to this venue
struggle with actually getting out of the pool especially when you're tired in really heavy
costumes the costumes add a lot of another layer to these shows um when you're already tired and
dancing full out and wet and then having to push yourself out of the pool and so they now you now
have to prove that you can swim i have worked in the past with a few dancers that we've had to take
swimming lessons in the mornings um but yeah it's now a requirement that you need to be a strong
enough swimmer to work in this venue actually one of our dancers used to be like a professional
swimmer and so that always helps uh and yeah yes hi um so yes we do have other duties on board we
try to support the entertainment division as much as possible to provide the best guest experience
so um it can be uh and obviously we also have safety requirements uh and that is for every
single crew member on board um but yeah mostly and the parade obviously uh all three casts are
in the parade as well as some activity staff so yeah i think that's about it i don't know if you
we do have the the entertainment cast uh structure they all are contracted to have
one non-performance day per week in the seven-day period that's also our for our musicians as well
so one day where they're not performing um any of the shows at all uh we do have certain guidelines
where we have um there needs to be certain times between show times or if there's some days our
parade will fall on the same day as a production show or a show there needs to be certain time in
between that that allows for warm-ups for rest um and so forth um so it's all structured in there
and that all has to fit in the big piece the big puzzle um that myself and the team put together
for the ship and you know ultimately becomes the product that we that we present so there is quite
a lot of you know intricate intricacies behind the scene of putting that jigsaw together for the
team but you know keeping safety in mind keeping you know all of the different conditions that we're
open to at sea and so on so we do look at all of that but they all do an incredible job and
absolutely amazing to see all of them doing what they're doing and as Thomas said lots of different
duties back at house as well with the supervisory roles they're taking on that administrative duty
as well as the artistic duty as well so it's a lot of work and they do an incredible incredible
job so thank you very much for that question it's like usual and where do they is there a rehearsal
so rehearsals yeah yeah we practice in Miami uh big studios uh where all of the ships that Royal
Caribbean has uh go that well for theater and for aqua and there's usually about three or four
ships in at once and all of the casts are learning the shows that they do and then we all come on
board and put it in once once the casts are installed and that's the same for all the venues
we don't rehearse the show like every day because it's we do it so often the biggest thing once
we're on board is getting especially for back to the future is getting the understudies ready
so if if say Justin is ill or or can't perform a show for whatever reason
if you haven't you haven't been yet touch wood exactly um one of the uh one of the other other
members of the cast is the doc understudy so it's making sure they're ready and they're safe to go
and that's the same for all the principal roles and it's safe for you guys as well
so yeah we don't do perhaps every day but it's just making sure that the cast know what they're
doing and they're ready to step in and we rehearsed our different safety scenarios and so forth up in
our aqua we've got a lot of flying too so we do all different um you know scenarios if there was
ever any you know technological uh things as well so there's a lot a lot of rehearsals and you might
see them as well up here in aqua it's an open venue so you might see them rehearsing from time
to time the other two venues are closed so you won't see that but uh yeah you'll see them rehearsing
a lot all right uh next question who do we have next um over here with keith on the aisle
are we going to be able to pet sailor are you able to pet sailor can you pet that dog
i love that question um yes right now no but when you find us around the ship
for sure um i'm just going to give you a little tidbit background okay so we work with american
humane um they oversee everything they make sure she's healthy happy um and living well on the ship
so she's only allowed in public for two hours that's it so we split the sessions like 20 minutes
30 minutes um but we are doing a lot more than two hours um you know because she's enjoying it she's
happy um but if you do see us for sure you are more than welcome you can say hi to me as well
if you want i know i'm attached to the dog it's okay um yeah but you can pet her for sure
she loves a chin scratch she loves a belly scratch yeah for sure she loves it all right
this is for you as the cruise director uh what's your day-to-day look like uh where's that energy
come from because i saw you dancing at the millennium dance party and i saw you at one
o'clock in the morning putting up cobwebs and spiders so how's that going a lot of coffee
a lot of coffee um my day usually starts around uh i usually i'm up at about 7 30 in the office
just after eight uh we meet every morning with all of the other division heads on board executive
housekeeper guest services food and beverage with our hotel director and go through the daily
operation break down there and discuss any uh things for the upcoming operation and so forth
then um different events here and there there's a lot of emails that come in from our shoreside
team from our onboard team a lot of logistics because i'm not just putting together the
program for this cruise we're already planning three months six months a year we're already
looking at different things which are already happening in november 2026 on board here
conference calls with our miami team a lot uh 280 team members in the in the group too so there's
different things which are coming um the way i have an incredible management team so the management
team within entertainment is just over 20 managers and supervisors that look after all of the
different teams um so they do assist with a lot of you know the day-to-day operation but it's
managing those logistics as well um and then hosting the different shows i don't host
a lot of the shows here on board to start the the bigger ships particularly with the broadway product
we don't host those shows um aqua i don't don't host here the ones that i do take off the i show
the headliner show create as well um they're the ones i'm allowed to be involved with the other
ones are self-sufficient um so the rest of my time is trying to get around and meet as many of
the you know six and a half to seven thousand guests that we have on board every week making
sure that everyone's having a good time so it's spreading the uh you know the lovers around as
much as i i can um but it is it's a big operation it's a huge business just the entertainment
product here on board is a multi-million dollar business which myself and the team run um so it's
it's a big operation um here on board and i hope that you enjoy every every bit of it this week
is a lot for for our team we've got halloween coming out of uh every other which way today
we've got of course the pumpkin carving contest up here so that's not a an activity we usually do
so all of those special events and as soon as we finish with halloween that's not planning for
thanksgiving and then as soon as we finish that or even before then we're already planning for an
entire month of holiday celebrations so as soon as december 1st kicks in it is all different christmas
activities and holiday activities too so a lot of planning a lot of meetings with the team planning
out things and then executing it as well so i usually get to bed at around 1 30 so i average
about six hours sleep most nights um first thing in the morning is pushing the go button on the
coffee machine and then that happens about six times within the next hour but yeah it's a big
day but i love it and i love working with the team i love working with the people as well and
and making sure that their vacations are as fabulous as possible so thank you i love it
would we choose cruising as a vacation and also say but if not what will we do
yeah um i've since started working for royal i've taken one cruise and it was for my friend's
birthday so i didn't get a choice and it was my best best mate we went with another cruise line
it was a very weird experience very very weird and i think when you when you're in this environment
you analyze everything and you become very um critical of things and and you
don't really see it as a as a as a guest sometimes i mean other people might be different but i'm
looking at everything going oh that's i wouldn't do that or that looks good isn't that so yeah i've
done it once in nearly 16 years um but i love to get around i love to go to the uk travel around
um travel around at home in australia as well so more land-based things we spent you know around
eight months of the year on at sea but i don't know anybody else want to add in their vacation
i guess the main reason is to see if you have a friend or someone that works on a ship you might
go cruise and have that as a vacation um as chris said we spend so much time on a ship
i just love being home and enjoying the land and going shopping and doing this and doing that so
um yeah for us i imagine most people will say no we have a time in the uk at busman's holiday
uh i don't know if you have that in america but uh yeah it's i would want to yeah i mean same i
think this place is uh too much of what of a workplace for me to be able to really uh picture
myself enjoying a vacation but you know i'm probably wrong to think that way because it's
everything to uh to be happy on vacation here and you know it has so much to offer but
personally for me i think i would go into more of a backpack vacation i really enjoy
to explore one country yeah like jack said i'd go home yeah if we if we were away for such long
periods of time and miss our family i'm lucky to have my mom and dad on this week
so going home kind of is a holiday yeah i actually don't ever take vacations uh in my
industry it's so hard to secure work that when i'm not working unless i know i have a job like
in the next month i'm looking for work um and i'm getting paid to be on this gorgeous ship for 10
months it's like i can't see paying for a cruise vacation when i i get i mean and in my position i
get some free time off every week to enjoy the ship so i this is more of a vacation than when
i'm unemployed when i retire though we can all come back and have a 25 year star reunion
it will be interesting though when i when i when we're all old i guess
to see if he came back to a ship that he worked on see if it changed see if it's
it shows the same and stuff so maybe one day it's a very different lifestyle to being on land
very different we get excited when we go home of going to the supermarket and driving a car
and you know doing doing those simple you know everyday things that everybody hates
cooking yes cooking it's cooking when you're actually we don't get to cook so get in the
kitchen yeah i miss my car yeah great question thank you thank you so much all right it's keith
up the back there we've got time for a few more questions first of all all your shows that we've
absolutely fantastic um my first question i don't know if you guys can answer the background
of the riders in the steel ball on torque and my question for you guys does the ship movement
affect you very much um they all they actually know each other the two guys that are here now
um and they are from columbia and they what like they've gone around and done a lot of their
background is more circus things um they say that this globe is a lot smaller than the others that
they've worked in before which almost makes it more impressive um so yeah they their background
is circus performing they started i know some of them on uh dirt bikes doing the the ramps
i'm not very technical at the motorbike stuff to be honest and the movement really does affect
our show particularly on day one we obviously had to really postpone our shows to day two
and because the movement was so bad um the divers we have so many things in the menu that keep
them safe and if you look behind you can see the traffic lights we have one on each
of the booths and then one in the middle that's basically a traffic light system for the divers
to know that it's safe for them to dive into the pool that there's not someone underneath them
when it's rocky it can happen that um a diver gets rocked back into the pool as they're trying
to swim out through the cave and so the production manager like jack who runs our show would see that
there's cameras all over underwater and he can obviously see as well from up there
um and he wouldn't give a green light to say you're safe because that basically means that
they're safe when they dive in from 10 meters or 17 meters or three even um in the air they need to
know that the pool's safe for them to go in but the movement affects everything we always try to
perform our shows for you guys but it's really important to keep the forecast as safe as we can
overseas once again we have our of course sailor and her team of staff
eve our aqua captain thomas our ice captain jack our production manager of course the
incredible background jason right here and i'm christian cruise director thank you so much for
joining us everyone stick around in here at 11 50 our veterans tribute uh coming up and then one
o'clock the pumpkin carving contest and two o'clock in the royal theater the love and marriage game
thanks for joining us everyone we'll see you soon bye
