While many people recognize the name of composer Randy Newman, fewer know about the generation that built the Newman family’s remarkable legacy in film music. Emil Newman was one of three musical brothers, alongside the celebrated Alfred Newman, who helped shape the sound of Hollywood during the golden age of motion pictures.

Born in 1911 to a family of Russian Jewish immigrants, Emil followed his older brother into the film industry and became a prolific music director, composer, conductor, and arranger. During his years at 20th Century Fox, he served as music director on more than 200 films, helping coordinate and oversee the musical production of countless Hollywood movies.

Among his most notable contributions was the beautiful composition “Lost April,” featured in the 1947 film The Bishop's Wife. He also earned an Academy Award nomination for his work as music director on Sun Valley Serenade, which featured Glenn Miller and introduced the famous song Chattanooga Choo Choo.
