Many people recognize the famous name Currier & Ives, known for their beautiful prints of American life. But few know the story of the second man behind that name — James Merritt Ives.

In this episode of American Legends, Tiffany Brannan explores the life of the businessman and artist who helped transform Nathaniel Currier’s small printing shop into the most famous lithographic publishing company in the world.

Born in New York City in 1824, Ives had little formal education but developed his artistic talent through self-study in libraries and galleries. His life changed when he married Caroline Clark and was introduced to Nathaniel Currier through family connections.

Originally hired as a bookkeeper, Ives quickly proved himself indispensable. He reorganized the company’s finances, streamlined production, and used his artistic instincts to understand what kinds of prints the public truly wanted.

In 1857 Currier recognized his talent and made him a partner, creating the legendary firm Currier & Ives.

Under Ives’s leadership the company expanded far beyond news illustrations. They produced thousands of prints depicting American landscapes, family life, winter scenes, political cartoons, Civil War events, and patriotic imagery.

Their colorful lithographs became affordable art for ordinary Americans and decorated homes across the country. By the end of the 19th century, Currier & Ives had produced more than 7,500 images and over a million prints, capturing the spirit of Victorian-era America.

Today their prints remain some of the most beloved images of 19th-century American life, offering a nostalgic window into the past.
