George Washington was the first president of the United States of America. In that first presidential election, which was very different from today’s voting process, members of the Electoral College voted unanimously to make General George Washington the fledgling nation’s first commander-in-chief. With no example to follow, Washington blazed the trail of presidency in a democratic republic which every future president would follow.
