Alleged FSU Gunman is Son of Deputy Sheriff; Senator Van Hollen Meets Abrego Garcia in El Salvador
The alleged gunman in Thursday’s Florida State University shooting was reportedly a student at the school, as well as a long-standing member of a police youth program. Authorities say 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner is the son of a sheriff’s deputy. Two people were killed and five were injured before the suspect was shot by police. The victims are in fair condition, and the suspect’s motive is still unknown.
Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen stirred political tensions during a visit to El Salvador. He met with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an illegal immigrant deported to the country from the United States. Republicans slammed the move because of Abrego Garcia's alleged gang activity.
Texas will soon become the 16th state to offer universal school choice, meaning public funds will help pay for private school tuition. President Donald Trump called the governor to praise the move, saying it's a step toward leading the nation in education. All Democrats opposed the measure, arguing it would hurt public schools and benefit the wealthiest. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott promises to keep the funding for private school vouchers and public schools separate.
