ExclusiveWhy so many villages in China have become deserted villages?

Numerous villages in the provinces of Henan, Hebei, Guangxi, Hubei, Hunan etc. have so many villages where most inhabitants have disappeared? Many houses are empty of human beings but furnitures and other daily stuff are left behind. Same thing seems to have happened to people who lived in luxury houses as well as in those simple poor man houses.

The only feasible reason is the massive death toll caused by COVID-19. The Chinese government claimed a death toll of 59,000. The founder of Falun Gong, Master Li said 400 millions died of Covid. Elon Musk's latest AI Grok 3 estimates up to 200 millions. A hacker hacked into the Chinese police data base which contains data about all living citizens of China and it revealed only 1 billion, unlike the Chinese government's claim of 1.4 billion. The loss of 400 million lives seems to be the feasible explanation for the lost villages, as well as the much less visited shopping centers in Chinese cities.
