Deadly wildfires are raging across Southern California, prompting the mandatory evacuation of over 80,000 residents. The Eaton fire began Tuesday around 6 p.m. ET. Officials say it has destroyed over 100 structures and is now threatening more than 13,000 buildings. President Biden today visited Los Angeles and was briefed on the fires.

President-elect Trump has asked the Supreme Court to call off sentencing in his New York criminal case scheduled for this Friday. Trump’s lawyers argue the sentencing would wrongly restrict him as he prepares to take office.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum pushed back against Trump’s pledge to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.” She suggested that North America, including the United States, could be renamed “Mexican America” — a historical name dating from the 1600’s.
