Global Tech Outage Cripples Industries; DNC Discusses Biden Nomination; Russia Sentences Gershkovich

A worldwide tech outage crippled industries from travel to finance on Friday before services started coming back online after hours of disruption. Global cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said the issue arose from a defect in its software update for Windows systems.

The Democratic National Committee’s rules committee meets to discuss the virtual voting process to nominate President Joe Biden before the in-person convention begins on August 19. The party seeks to hold a virtual vote before August 7, but no earlier than August 1.

A Russian court found U.S. reporter Evan Gershkovich guilty of espionage and sentenced him to 16 years in a maximum security penal colony. His employer, the Wall Street Journal, called it “a disgraceful sham conviction.”
