What is Classic Fit? Mastering Suit Fit and Timeless Tailoring

When we talk about classic menswear, fit is king. It's one of the most important elements of tailoring obviously. Michael here is one of my favorite customers and he wears his clothing in a very classic almost old-school retro way that I absolutely love. A lot of times you'll hear drape fit or classic fit and I want to kind of talk about some elements of that. So first and foremost a very important adjustment that we have to do for Mike is shoulders. He has very square shoulders so things off the rack can sit high on the neck or curl in the back or have issues throughout the back. So when you adjust the shoulders you really get a clean fabric across the back. Everything hangs from the shoulders. It's super, super important. So no collar roll. You're seeing about three-eighths of an inch of collar on his shirt. That's hitting him right at the beginning of his arms but shoulders. Very clean back. That's really, really important. Especially when you're using really high-end beautiful fabrics like this. You want to eliminate all the wrinkles and just let that fabric really shine and have a nice shape to it. Now we talk about drape fit. It's a fuller cut so he has a little bit of room in the jacket. So it's really draping. It's not even really hugging his body anywhere. It's more kind of encapsulating his body you could say. So it's roomy. When he moves around the garment has movement to it and that is very romantic and I would say very comfortable as well. But a lot of the other elements are the same. So we're looking at about a quarter inch of sleeve showing at each side under the shirt jacket. Length is maybe a touch longer as well. A lot of times for most clients will shoot around the crotch level. For Mike we go a touch longer. Kind of goes with the fuller cut. But this to me is a very timeless fit of a garment and it's sort of the antithesis to what we're seeing so much with very tight slim fit suits. Everyone's suits so tight. Whenever I see a guy wearing a suit like this it comes off as very suave and a guy really knows what he's doing. So love Mike. Love the fit and that's Classic Fit.
