TOWN OF SOUTHEAST – State Police Wednesday identified an 87-year-old Brewster woman killed in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Route 6—Danbury-Brewster Road and Dingle Ridge Road, 24 hours earlier as Helen Gambino.

Troopers said 911 calls sent patrols from the Brewster barracks, Brewster Fire Department personnel, Brewster Rescue Squad and a Putnam-Empress Paramedic to the busy intersection located less than a mile from the Connecticut border.

Investigators determined that Gambino had stopped at a stop sign and was attempting to turn onto the state highway when an eastbound BMW driven by Caua Dos Santos Rocha, 19, of Danbury struck her vehicle.

Police said the impact caused the Subaru to overturn and come to rest in the center median. Following the initial collision, the BMW struck a Honda operated by a 23-year-old Danbury man that was also traveling eastbound in the right lane at the time.

Gambino was pronounced dead at Danbury Hospital after being rushed there.

Rocha was treated at the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
