Taipei — Weta FX and TAICCA Partner to Position Taiwan as Asia’s AI Screen Production Hub

New Zealand visual effects studio Weta FX, known for its work on “The Lord of the Rings” and “Avatar,” is joining forces with the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) to establish Taiwan as a leading hub for artificial intelligence-powered screen production in Asia.

The collaboration will officially launch on Nov. 6 during the Taiwan Creative Content Fest (TCCF) in Taipei. The announcement will take place on the festival’s main stage immediately following the opening ceremony. Its framework will cover three key areas: joint investment, AI research and development, and the training of emerging talent.

Further details about the partnership are being reserved for the official launch.

TAICCA chair Sue Wang is scheduled to attend alongside three senior Weta FX representatives: CEO Daniel Seah, chief technology officer Kimball Thurston and VFX supervisor Sheldon Stopsack.

The agreement brings together Taiwan’s strengths in artificial intelligence, advanced technology and creative talent with Weta FX’s visual effects expertise, international production experience and established global connections. Through the collaboration, the partners aim to connect Taiwanese technology specialists and creative professionals with opportunities throughout the international screen industry.

The partnership also has personal significance for Seah, who spent his childhood in Taiwan. Weta FX has been strengthening its presence and relationships on the island, including its participation in the Taoyuan International Film & Technology Forum in August.

The initiative supports TAICCA’s broader mission of encouraging the integration of emerging technologies into content creation. One example is TTXC Innovations, a recently completed market platform designed to connect cultural content with technology and commercial opportunities. The initiative brought creators, technology developers, investors, buyers and distributors together to facilitate industry collaboration.

Established by Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture in 2019, TAICCA supports the development and international expansion of Taiwanese creative content. Its responsibilities span film, television, animation, publishing, comics, music, gaming and performing arts, covering activities from development and production to distribution and overseas marketing. The agency provides support through investment, co-production initiatives, industry programs and international partnerships.

Weta FX is headquartered in Wellington, New Zealand, with additional offices in Vancouver and Melbourne. The studio’s awards include eight Oscars for visual effects, 17 Academy Science & Technology Awards, eight BAFTAs for special visual effects, 10 VES Awards in the photoreal feature category and five Emmys.

Its most recent contribution to the “Avatar” franchise was 2025’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash.” Other projects currently in production include “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Children of Blood and Bone.”
