A live Prince concert is coming to silver screens in December to accompany an expanded version of his 2006 album “3121.”
“Prince: 3121 Las Vegas Concert,” presented in 4K and Dolby Atmos, will be released theatrically on Dec. 3 for a limited time. More information on participating theaters will be announced online at iconicreleasing.com/events/prince, with tickets set to go on sale on Nov. 11.
The expanded version of “3121” features seven previously unreleased songs and acoustic versions of the album tracks “The Word,” “Love” and “Te Amo Corazon.” It will be released Dec. 11 digitally and on vinyl and CD, with a Blu-ray featuring the “3121” concert. In addition, the concert will be issued on vinyl and CD for Record Store Day on Nov. 27. Thursday, the Prince Estate teased the projects by releasing a live version of “Black Sweat” as well as “Time Of Ur Life” from the “3121” bonus disc.
The “3121” era found Prince in work mode. The album itself was Prince’s first to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and his fourth chart-topping album overall. It also earned five Grammy nominations.
He opened 2006 with an intimate tour of smaller venues, including the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, showcasing Tamar Davis, his protege at the time. In a news release, Davis said that “collaborating with Prince and the talented musicians on ‘3121’ was an honor. I remain grateful to have contributed my voice to this record and to have been part of such a remarkable creative experience.”
Later in the year, Prince embarked on a massive Las Vegas residency that ran from November 2006 to April 2007 and then went on for another 21 dates in London that summer. The live concert was recorded on Jan. 20, 2007, just weeks before Prince headlined the Super Bowl halftime show in Miami, a performance widely considered to be the best halftime show in history.
The 154-minute concert film includes songs from “3121” along with such hits as “Kiss,” “Purple Rain,” “Cream,” “U Got the Look” and “If I Was Your Girlfriend.”
