CARMEL – The Stoneleigh Avenue and Drewville Road intersection in Carmel have long presented significant safety concerns, particularly given its importance as an access route to Putnam Hospital Center.
Plans for a roundabout intended to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and enhance safety for motorists, emergency vehicles and residents traveling through the area were announced some time ago and now New York State has appropriated $1.5 million or 15 percent of the $10 million project’s cost that will improve roadway safety, modernize local infrastructure and address transportation needs throughout the Hudson Valley.
During a news conference at the busy intersection, State Assemblyman Matt Slater R, Yorktown) described the project as an “important investment in the future of our transportation infrastructure.”
Slater said he understands “how critical it is to secure funding for projects that directly impact the safety of our counties.”
“Getting this project to the construction phase has taken years of work from our local, state, and federal partners. These improvements are about making our roads safer and ensuring patients, families, and first responders can get to Putnam Hospital safely,” said Congressman Michael Lawler (R, NY-17).
County Executive Kevin Byrne was also appreciative calling the intersection of Stoneleigh Avenue and Drewville Road a “longstanding safety concern, particularly for the thousands of residents, patients, healthcare workers and first responders who rely on it to access Putnam Hospital. The project is a major investment in public safety and our county’s infrastructure, and one that is long overdue.”
