NEWBURGH – Members of the Newburgh City Council are going to consider granting themselves raises. The last time members approved pay hikes for the part-time positions was 2024.

One councilwoman, Tamika Stewart, is opposed to raises for personal reasons.

“Right now, I feel like I’m new, I’m just getting in the door and I wouldn’t ask for a raise in my first year of doing a job,” she told Mid-Hudson News.

Under the current proposal, the mayor’s annual salary would increase from $22,500 to $27,000, a 20 percent increase.

The two council-at-large members would see their annual pay increase from $20,000 to $24,000, also a 20 percent increase.

The four other members, who each represent a specific ward, would see their part-time salaries increase from $17,000 to $24,000, a 41 percent increase.

All seven members also receive city-paid benefits.
