MIDDLETOWN – Added expenses and increased costs could drive the City of Middletown past the two percent state mandated tax cap for the first time in 15 years.

Mayor Joseph DeStefano gave the gloomy news to the common council Tuesday night saying there are certain financial obligations that must be met.

“This year, the 2027 proposed budget calls for – these are numbers coming down from the comptroller’s office; not negotiable numbers – an increase in benefits of $1,313,660,” he said.

The mayor said the city also faces an increase of $82,000 in general recreation, $228,000 increase in park maintenance, a $518,000 increase in police work, and labor contracts that have either expired or are coming due.
