LANCASTER — From brilliantly colored tanagers to broad-billed toucans and elusive trogons, Colombia is home to an extraordinary variety of birds. Lancaster resident and photographer David Ammerman has spent years seeking them out, camera in hand, and he will share some of his favorite discoveries during a presentation at Thayer Memorial Library.
Ammerman will present “Tanagers, Toucans and Trogons: The Birds of Colombia” at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 19, at the library, 717 Main St. The program will feature photographs taken during his travels through Colombia, offering an up-close look at the country’s colorful birdlife, including tanagers, toucans, trogons, hummingbirds and some of its rarer species.
Ammerman has spent more than a decade exploring forests in the United States and around the world in search of birds. His photography has become part of the birding community as well: More than 100 of his photographs have been used by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s eBird program to help train its Merlin bird-identification app.
His interest in birding also has led him to share his knowledge with others. For several years, Ammerman has led birding trips for the Forbush Bird Club, introducing fellow bird enthusiasts to the birds and habitats he has encountered in his travels.
At the library presentation, Ammerman will combine his photographs and experiences to give attendees a glimpse of Colombia’s remarkable bird diversity and the challenges and rewards of searching for birds in the field.
