HUDSON, N.H. — A Lowell man who police say accidentally shot himself inside a Hudson apartment building this summer was arrested this week on charges alleging he fired the weapon recklessly in August and then tried to conceal what happened.

Heriberto Diaz, 24, was found bleeding from a gunshot wound to his left hand after officers responded to Lions Avenue at about 2 a.m. on Aug. 10 for reports of a loud bang and a man outside the building who appeared to be injured, according to the Hudson Police Department.

Police said they located evidence of a firearm discharge in a common hallway and damage to a wall and floor consistent with a round being fired.

Diaz, who was transported to Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua, New Hampshire, for treatment, later became the focus of a weeks-long investigation involving witness interviews, physical evidence analysis, and search warrants for two apartments in the building.

Police allege that Diaz discharged the handgun while handling it in a stairwell, injuring himself, and then attempted to hide evidence connected to the shooting. Police said they recovered a firearm “and other evidence and documented damage to a wall and floor consistent with the firearm discharge.”

Based on the findings, police obtained an arrest warrant charging Diaz with one count of reckless conduct with a deadly weapon and two counts of falsifying physical evidence.

On Thursday, police took Diaz into custody at the Billerica House of Corrections, where he was being held pending his extradition to Hudson, N.H., for the charges. He was booked at the Hudson Police Department and later released after posting $200 cash bail set by a bail commissioner.

Diaz is scheduled to appear in Hillsborough County Superior Court — Southern District in Nashua at 1 p.m. Nov. 24.
