Hollywood — Zendaya Boards Alex Garland’s Upcoming Sci-Fi Film for A24

Zendaya is preparing to return to science fiction with a new project from filmmaker Alex Garland, reuniting with the genre after her work in the Dune franchise.

The actress has signed on to star in an untitled sci-fi feature that Garland will write and direct for A24. Details about the story remain confidential, while filming is scheduled to take place in 2027.

The movie represents another partnership between Zendaya and A24, following their work together on the hit series Euphoria, which wrapped up its run after three seasons earlier this year. The actress also starred opposite Robert Pattinson in the dark comedy-drama The Drama, which proved successful at the box office, generating almost $135 million worldwide.

For Garland, the upcoming production adds another chapter to his established relationship with A24. The studio has produced and distributed several of his films, including the 2024 science fiction feature Ex Machina, as well as Civil War, Men and Warfare.

A24 is also backing Garland’s forthcoming big-budget adaptation of the video game Elden Ring. The film stars Kit Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Ben Whishaw, Nick Offerman and Tom Burke. Production wrapped on July 30, and the movie is scheduled to arrive in March 2028.

Beyond The Drama, Zendaya has featured in two of 2026’s biggest films, The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, both of which broke box office records. She is also set to return to the desert planet Arrakis in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three, scheduled for release on Dec. 16.

Garland’s return to science fiction is likely to interest fans of his previous work in the genre, including the Netflix film Annihilation and the FX series Devs.

However, the new project could further postpone plans for a third 28 Years Later film. Garland wrote the original 28 Days Later and later reunited with Danny Boyle for last year’s 28 Years Later and its rapidly produced follow-up, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.

During a recent appearance at the London Film Festival, Boyle revealed that Garland had completed a “fantastic script” for a third installment. He also explained that Garland was now occupied with Elden Ring, leaving the proposed sequel on hold.

“So it’s on the back burner at the moment,” Boyle said.

With Garland now committed to another science fiction project, the third 28 Years Later film could face an even longer wait.
