Hollywood — ‘The Mummy 4’ With Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz Officially Titled ‘The Mummy: The Book of the Dead’
The fourth installment of the “Mummy” franchise starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz has officially received a new title: “The Mummy: The Book of the Dead.”
Fraser and Weisz will return as Rick and Evie O’Connell, joined by John Hannah, Michael Johnston, Numan Acar, Kevin J. O’Connor and Oded Fehr. Details about the film’s plot remain under wraps. As previously announced, Universal plans to release the movie in theaters on Oct. 15, 2027.
The franchise began with the 1999 blockbuster “The Mummy,” which brought Fraser and Weisz together on screen. The story centers on a treasure hunter who inadvertently awakens a cursed Egyptian priest possessing supernatural abilities. The film, a reboot of one of Universal’s classic creature features, led to two sequels: “The Mummy Returns” in 2001 and “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” in 2008. The franchise also produced the 2002 spinoff “The Scorpion King,” starring Dwayne Johnson.
Fraser appeared in both “The Mummy Returns” and “Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,” but Weisz did not return for the third installment.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the filmmaking duo known as Radio Silence, will direct the fourth chapter of the long-running action franchise. The screenplay was written by David Coggeshall.
Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett are known for their 2019 film “Ready or Not” and their work reviving the “Scream” franchise for Paramount in 2022. Coggeshall’s previous credits include “The Family Plan” and “Orphan: First Kill.”
Sean Daniel will produce the fourth film, continuing his involvement with the franchise after working on its previous five installments, including the 2017 reboot starring Tom Cruise. That attempt to relaunch the property was a critical and commercial failure, effectively bringing the studio’s plans for an interconnected Dark Universe to an end.
William Sherak, James Vanderbilt and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment, along with Clayton Townsend, will also serve as producers. Fraser and Jason F. Brown of Hivemind are set to executive produce “The Mummy: The Book of the Dead.”
