STURBRIDGE —The scene at Old Sturbridge Village is creepy and chilling this month as New England’s largest living history museum brings to life its Phantoms by Firelight: Frankenstein Encounter.
Running weekends through Oct. 25, the Halloween season event transforms the normally peaceful 200-acre village into a shadowy world of dense fog, ominous music, and crackling electricity — an homage to Mary Shelly’s Gothic science fiction novel published in 1818.

The experience is family friendly during the day with games, ghost stories by the bonfire, live music, fire performances, and a monster-themed take on trick-or-treating. And then as darkness falls, Shelley’s story takes over with a cast of professional performers bringing key characters including scientist Victor Frankenstein and his creature creation to life as visitors are drawn deeper into the unfolding drama.
No knowledge of Frankenstein is necessary, but fans of the iconic tale will recognize settings and scenes from the original novel and be immersed in theatrical fog, lighting effects, low-light areas, fire, uneven flooring and tight passageways, loud music and sound effects, and recreated scenes of conflict.
