PHILIPSTOWN- It’s been a glorious week of weather, and dozens of hikers have trekked mountain trails and passes in search of fantastic fall foliage.

Cold Spring Fire Department personnel, members of the Philipstown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, a Putnam Empress Paramedic, North Highlands firefighters, and New York State Park Police were pressed into action when a 9-1-1 call was received at the Putnam Emergency Dispatch Center in Carmel reporting an injured hiker in the Hudson Highlands State Park in Philipstown.

Cold Spring Fire Department officials said: “On calls like these the command serves as the coordination point for the response, helping manage communications, track crews and resources, and coordinate the efforts of the multiple agencies working together on the incident.”

After locating the unidentified hiker, crews worked into the evening to carry the injured person down a steep trail and transport them to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Putnam Commissioner of Emergency Services James Oster commended the rescue: “Calls like this require communication, coordination, and teamwork across agencies. We appreciate the mutual aid and cooperation of everyone who worked together on this response,” he said.

Meanwhile, Cold Spring fire officials reminded the public: “Fall weather is now upon us and leaf peeping season has begun. We would like to remind everyone who wishes to use our trails to plan accordingly. Wearing the correct attire and knowing the route you wish to use will reduce the need for our services. Mountain rescues can be extremely time-consuming and dangerous to both the patient and rescuers entering the woods.”
