KINGSTON – The Ulster County Legislature’s Housing Committee took the first step Thursday to expand emergency shelter capacity and reduce reliance on hotel and motel placements for emergency housing.

Committee members approved developing a plan for county-operated shelter, something Chairwoman Debra Clinton said the resolution is a first step.

“We know that there is a long road but we’re making progress and we’re making progress as a team for the good needs of members of our communities,” she said.

The resolution also calls for the feasibility of acquiring a motel that could house up to 40 families in the greater Kingston area. The county is currently housing several families in a privately owned former hotel in the Town of Ulster.

Legislators also approved just under $2.1 million from the assigned fund balance to provide funding for development of emergency housing.

The full legislature is expected to approve the resolutions at its next session.
