ELLENVILLE – October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and health experts emphasize that early detection remains the most powerful defense.
Samantha Riley, executive director of the Rural Health Network at Ellenville Regional Hospital, stresses that women over 40 should schedule an annual mammogram that takes just minutes to complete and can catch changes years before they can be felt, ensuring patients receive supportive, proactive care:
“The sooner you find these things and the sooner you start treatment, the better,” she said. “If you wait, then the treatment outcomes might not be as good. It’s more costly. So it’s better to catch these things early.”
She says they planted almost a thousand breast cancer awareness pinwheels on the campus:
“There are 980 pinwheels outside. And that represents the number of mammograms that we’ve done here at the hospital in the past year.”
She said the wait times to get an appointment are minimal, and the radiology department has state-of-the-art equipment:
“So if you’re a little leery about getting a mammogram, you will be well taken care of by the staff.”
