HAVERSTRAW – Ground was ceremonially broken on Wednesday for the $13 million Village Square mixed-use housing project in downtown Village of Haverstraw.

It is a keystone component of the village’s state Downtown Revitalization Initiative that will turn a blighted site into a five-story mixed-use building with 61 apartments, a cafe and community space.

State Secretary of State Walter Mosley said the project “marks an important step in Haverstraw’s continued transformation, turning a previously underutilized site into a welcoming place for people to live, work and spend time in the heart of the village.”

Mayor Michael Kohut said the groundbreaking “is an exciting milestone for Haverstraw and a clear sign of the progress we are making to revitalize our downtown.”

The project is being partially funded with a $1.67 million in state DRI grant.
