The Essex District Attorney’s Office identified two victims, one dead and one still missing, in a weekend boat accident off the coast of Manchester-by-the-Sea.

The office said in a statement that Carl Potter, 67, of Beverly, was pronounced dead at a hospital after being pulled from the water Saturday. The statement also identified the missing 37-year-old as James Wolcott, of Hamilton.

The third passenger on the boat, a 65-year-old man, remains in the hospital, the DA said, noting to maintain the man’s privacy, he wouldn’t be identified at this time.

The Coast Guard received reports of a boat doing circles in the waters off Graves Beach with no one on board around 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

The dog on board and the two men in their 60s were found in the water soon after, while Wolcott remained missing. The Coast Guard and other entities searched for the missing man for about 24 hours and called off the search Sunday afternoon.

“The decision to suspend a search is never made lightly,” Capt. Jamie Frederick, Sector Boston Commander, said in a statement. “Our deepest condolences are with the family and loved ones affected by this tragedy. We are grateful to our local, state, and federal partners who supported the search efforts.”

The dog rescued from the water has been returned to its family, the Coast Guard noted.
