Two women were injured in a stabbing early Saturday at a Quick Chek gas station, and one of the women was taken into custody after police said she was found with a knife.
Middletown police were called to the Quick Chek at 1 James P. Kelly Way at about 4:41 a.m. for a report of a stabbing.
Officers found a 23-year-old woman outside a vehicle stopped on Route 17M in front of the gas station. She was bleeding heavily from multiple stab wounds.
Officers provided first aid, including applying a tourniquet, and transported the woman to Garnet Health Medical Center in a police vehicle because an Empress Ambulance was not immediately available.
As other officers investigated, they were directed inside the store after receiving a report of another stabbing victim. They found a 21-year-old woman in the women’s restroom suffering from several stab wounds.
Police said the 21-year-old was holding a knife and became combative and noncompliant when officers approached. She was taken into custody and also transported to Garnet Health in a police vehicle for treatment.
The 23-year-old woman suffered multiple serious injuries to her torso and extremities, but the injuries were not considered life-threatening. She underwent surgery and is expected to survive, police said.
The 21-year-old woman suffered superficial injuries and also is expected to survive. Police said charges against her are pending.
Police said the two women are known acquaintances and that the incident began with a dispute inside the 23-year-old’s vehicle while the women were traveling together.
No other suspects are being sought, and police said there is no broader threat to the community. As of about noon on Saturday, the Quick Chek where the incident occurred was closed. A handwritten sign on the door read: “Sorry, we are temporarily closed.”
The investigation by the Middletown Police Department’s Detective Division remains ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call police at 845-343-3151.
Police thanked the Town of Wallkill Police Department, New York State Police and Orange County Sheriff’s Office for providing assistance at the scene and at Garnet Health Medical Center.
