Lena Dunham Welcomes First Child Through Surrogacy
New York — Lena Dunham and her husband, Luis Felber, have welcomed their first child, a daughter born through a surrogate.
Dunham announced the birth in an op-ed published by Vogue on Wednesday, where she detailed the arrival of her daughter and the lengthy fertility journey that came before it.
The actress and writer said her daughter was born 13 days after her due date. During labor, Dunham recalled remaining focused on the surrogate before eventually looking down after hearing her baby cry.
She described seeing her newborn daughter for the first time and said she was “bashful and dizzy with joy.”
Dunham, 40, is widely known as the creator and star of the television series “Girls.” Her journey to motherhood followed years of medical and fertility difficulties.
In 2018, Dunham disclosed that she had undergone a hysterectomy to address pain associated with endometriosis. The procedure removed her cervix and uterus, meaning she could no longer become pregnant naturally.
She later turned to surrogacy, eventually meeting the woman who would carry her child.
Dunham said she had initially anticipated feeling jealous of her surrogate. Instead, she wrote that the relationship developed into one based on trust and an emotional bond.
The pregnancy came after what Dunham described as “12 years circling the fertility drain.” She also wrote about the uncertainty surrounding the embryo transfer and the period of waiting that followed as she learned whether the pregnancy would continue.
As she prepared for the baby’s arrival, Dunham said she went shopping for clothing, despite a Jewish superstition observed by some families that discourages buying items for an expected child before the birth.
She explained that she wanted the clothes to leave room for her daughter’s personality to develop, rather than assigning an identity to her before she was able to express herself.
Dunham has previously spoken publicly about her health and reproductive history, including the endometriosis that ultimately resulted in her hysterectomy.
Now, Dunham and Felber are entering parenthood together after years of uncertainty over whether Dunham would be able to have a child.
The birth of their daughter begins a new chapter for Dunham, whose career has spanned acting, writing, directing and producing.
