LEOMINSTER — The Leominster Sportsmen’s Association (LSA) is offering two hands-on gun safety events coming up.

Learn proper gun handling with rifles, pistols, shotguns, and muzzleloaders on Sunday, Sept. 20 from 9 a.m. to noon at the 1455 Elm St. spot, the club’s annual National Rifle Association (NRA) Day that coincides with National Hunting and Fishing Day. The event will be held rain or shine — it’s under shelter — and the club barbecue will follow.

There will be archery, safety and shooting lessons, the pond will be open for fishing, and it’s just $10 per family to participate. The program geared towards both newcomers and experienced shooters alike, providing a hands-on opportunity to learn gun safety and proper gun handling, and they will have over 100 steel silhouette targets for an arcade-style shoot.

“Our aim is to provide a safe, structured, hands-on learning environment under the direction & supervision of experienced shooters, instructors & coaches,” event information shares. “Bring your kids/ grandkids/ nieces/ nephews, etc. Pass on this Great American Tradition or start a new one!”

Participants should bring their own safety glasses and earmuffs and 22LR ammo if they have some and the LSA is wheelchair accessible.

Also being held at the club that was founded in 1886 and encompasses 540 acres of woodland adjacent to Leominster State Forest and Bartlett Pond is a women-on-target firearms instructional shooting clinic on Sunday, Oct. 25 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The program sponsored by NRA Women on Target and the Gun Owner’s Action League costs $100 and includes loaner firearms, ammunition, and eye and ear protection.

“If you ever considered trying recreational shooting, now is the time!” the event flyer states. “Come join us for a women’s only instructional shooting clinic. You will receive hands-on shotgun, rifle, and pistol instructions in a safe, non-competitive atmosphere with competent instructors. All women are invited to participate, regardless of skill level. No previous experience is necessary; just the desire to learn and have fun.”

The home firearms safety course is included in the October program so that participants can apply for their Massachusetts firearms permit if they want. A light lunch will be provided following the morning program and then they will head to the outdoor ranges.
