Nothing rounds out a holiday movie list quite like a feature based on the Nativity. This season, one more film will add to that list: God With Us.
In 2013, holiday audiences were treated to a retelling inspired by the Nativity story and a work by Langston Hughes, “Wasn’t That a Mighty Day. This year, another dramatic interpretation of the familiar story will grace the silver screen, with its premiere set for November 13, just in time for a seasonal warm-up.
A Familiar Story Through a Modern Lens
God With Us takes a different approach to the Nativity, using a modern lens to revisit what has often been called “the greatest story ever told.” The film stars Ashley Oliver Fisher and Aspen Kennedy as Mary and Joseph, though this version gives the well-known figures a contemporary identity as childhood sweethearts Mary Anne Thomas and Joseph “Junie” Love.
According to Blexmedia,
The couple finds themselves navigating an unexpected pregnancy that tests both their faith and their bond. F
From there, the story expands beyond the couple themselves and into a world that has seemingly lost its connection to belief.
A closer look at the synopsis reveals
“Set in a world where the promised Savior never came, God With Us follows a young couple whose faith and love are tested after a miraculous pregnancy sparks hope and conflict in a city that’s forgotten how to believe.”
That premise gives the film a parabolic quality, allowing the familiar themes of the Nativity to be explored through circumstances that feel removed from the traditional telling.
A Cast Familiar With Faith-Based Stories
Jimmy Jenkins serves as both director and screenwriter, bringing the story to the screen alongside a cast that includes Fisher, Kennedy, Clifton Powell, Lil Rel Howery, Gregory Allen Williams, Roger Guenveur Smith, and Rotimi, among others.
For viewers who regularly gravitate toward faith-based films, the ensemble may offer an added sense of familiarity. Several of the actors have experience with material that explores faith, family, perseverance, and the human experience, making them a fitting group to carry a story built around such themes.
With the story, cast, and creative team now in place, audiences have received their first glimpse of the film through its recently released trailer.

The trailer gives viewers an early look at the tone and direction of God With Us, while leaving audiences to decide whether this contemporary take on the Nativity deserves a place among their seasonal favorites.
With its November 13 premiere approaching, God With Us arrives with a familiar story at its foundation but a different perspective on how that story is told. For those looking to add something new to their holiday viewing traditions, this modern interpretation may offer the perfect pre-holiday gift.
