The Obamas are saying goodbye to a beloved member of their family: Sunny, their 13-year-old Portuguese water dog.

Michelle and Barack Obama took to Instagram on Wednesday to announce the death of Sunny, who moved into the White House with them back in 2013. They also included photographs of their beloved pup over the years, including her early days in D.C. and her meeting Pope Francis.

“We got Sunny at the start of our second term in the White House, and all of us — including our first dog, Bo — immediately fell in love,” they wrote. “We also had trouble keeping up with her, for Sunny was a force of nature.”

The former first couple described Sunny as “athletic and full of boundless energy,” recalling how she “leapt over the hedges on the South Lawn like they weren’t even there, chasing squirrels, birds and anything else that moved.”

Both Sunny and Bo were fixtures at the White House, oftentimes making cameos at public events, and even appearing on the family Christmas card. In a 2015 interview, Michelle revealed the dogs became so beloved that they required their own schedule.

Bo died in 2021.

“She loved the girls, even if they were pestering her when she was napping. She loved our team, and would often follow them around, helping them on the job,” the Obamas wrote.

“As far as our family was concerned, she was pretty much perfect, and for thirteen years, she would be by our side — always loyal, always sweet, always ready for adventure, still fiery and gorgeous till the very end of her days,” they concluded. “We will miss her terribly, and imagine she’s with her big brother now, making sure he’s okay.”
