MAYNARD — Local and state law enforcement officials responsible for safely disarming live explosives were grateful area residents alerted them about a potential live unexploded artillery shell inside a home on Douglas Avenue.
On Thursday, Sept. 10, at 2:34 p.m., the Maynard Police and Fire Departments responded to a home on Douglas Avenue in regards to a call about a potentially live artillery shell found inside the home. After securing the area, first responders arrived at the scene and located what appeared to be a large, partially rusted artillery shell.
On Thursday afternoon the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad with the Maynard Police and Fire departments detonated a large, unexploded artillery shell that was found in the Maynard home.
“I want to thank residents who may have been alarmed by the loud bang when this ordinance was safely disposed of,” said Police Chief Christopher Troiano. “It was important that we keep people away from the detonation area so we did not want to announce this activity in advance.”
After responding to the scene, the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad first confirmed the ordnance was live, and transported it to a secluded location off Pine Hill Road in Maynard where it was safely detonated at about 5:30 p.m.
“I want to thank the police, firefighters and Bomb Squad technicians who worked seamlessly together to ensure this incident was handled safely,” said Fire Chief Angela Lawless. “I also want to thank the residents who did the right thing by promptly reporting this discovery and letting us safely handle it.”
