Representatives from Blue Star Mothers Massachusetts Chapter 1, also based in Leominster, joined in along with veterans and others to put well over 2,000 flags in the ground in front of the Leominster Veterans Center on Sept. 8. The group dubbed the effort Field of Flags as a tribute to the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, with a banner hanging behind the flags noting the name.

“The flags represent the lives lost,” Massachusetts DAR State Librarian and Capt. John Joslin, Jr. chapter Vice Regent Sharon Bouchard shared. “As DAR, we trace our own history back to citizens who understood that liberty demands sacrifice, and we see that same spirit in the way our nation responded that terrible day.

“This is also about teaching the next generation, many who weren’t born yet, what it costs to keep this country free,” she continued. “We hope the Field of Flags display helps our community pause, reflect, and remember.”

Capt. John Joslin, Jr. chapter Regent Erica Milano echoed Bouchard’s moving sentiments, saying, “as we look across this Field of Flags, we are reminded that behind every flag was a person.”

“Twenty-five years may have passed but their lives and their stories will never be forgotten.”
