There’s a lot of art to report on this week in the region, so let’s get started.

The Fitchburg State University Humanities Department presents its first exhibition of the academic year, featuring local artist Romayne Dawnay.

The exhibition is on display through Oct. 18 at the Hammond Art Gallery, located in Hammond Hall on Pearl Street.

There will be an opening reception at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17 at the gallery. The exhibit started on Tuesday, Sept. 1. Admission is free and open to the public.

Dawnay is an Ashburnham-based multi-media artist whose work on paper and tactile, hand-held objects — including handmade books, boxes, and bone carvings — explores themes of connection, energy, and universality found in both natural elements and cultural remnants.

Formatively trained at the Oxford School of Art and Hornsey Art School, her artistic vision was deeply shaped by her former career as an archaeological draftsperson in Italy and Iran, where encounters with ancient artifacts ignited a lifelong curiosity in the cross-cultural threads that span time and space.

Her artwork and illustrations have been exhibited internationally in New York, London, and Rome, featured in prestigious academic publications for institutions like Harvard University, and held in private collections across the U.S. and UK. For info, visit www.fitchburgstate.edu.

Two receptions are this Saturday, Sept. 12 for exhibitions in Lowell. One is at 1-3 p.m. for Kerouac: Beat and Counterculture Portraits by Jonathan Collins at Whistler House Museum of Art on Worthen Street, and the other is from 3-5 p.m. in ALL’s Greenwald Gallery on Market Street for The Three of Us. Visit www.whistlerhouse.org and www.artsleagueoflowell.org for more info and hours.

Shapes & Symbols has opened at the larger ALL Gallery, also on Market Street, and is on display through November 1. A reception takes place on Saturday, Sept. 19 from 3-5 p.m.

And save the date – October 3 – for the Brush Art Gallery and Studios (The Brush) Addison Tour & Cocktail Party, which will take place at 3 Chapel Avenue in Andover, at the Addison Gallery of American Art.

The event begins at 4 p.m. and will support The Brush. It will be followed by a private cocktail reception at 5 p.m. next door at the Andover Inn, 4 Chapel Ave and includes specially prepared hors d’oeuvres and cash bar.

Early sponsors of this event include Ellen Andre, Joanne & Andy Bergamini, Michael G. Conway Insurance Agency, Richard K. & Nancy L. Donahue Charitable Foundation, Greater Lowell Community Foundation, John & Diane Healy, Michael H. Lally, Rosemary Noon & Paul Marion, Jack Moynihan & Carolyn Walsh, Bob Stegmaier, and Washington Savings Bank.

The Brush’s current programs include a Diversity Initiative which is a subsidized studio rental for an artist who demonstrates an aptitude in his/her art form. Also, a longtime tradition, is the Four by Four for Education exhibit which funds a scholarship for a UMass Lowell student, and art classes for Megan’s House and Recreational Adult Resource Association.

Admission is $89 and payments can be made at www.thebrush.org/tour.htm.
