TOWNSEND — Area residents will gather on the Townsend Common Friday, Sept. 18, to honor American prisoners of war and those still missing in action.

Townsend VFW Post 6538 and its Auxiliary will hold a candlelight POW/MIA Recognition Ceremony beginning at 6:15 p.m. in observance of National POW/MIA Recognition Day. The public is invited to attend.

The ceremony serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by American service members and the importance of continuing efforts to account for those who remain missing.

Among those remembered will be the 39 Massachusetts residents who remain unaccounted for in Indochina following the Vietnam Conflict.

Organizers are asking area residents to show their support by wearing a red ribbon, POW/MIA bracelet or by displaying a black POW/MIA flag beneath the American flag.

The ceremony will honor not only those still missing, but also their families and the enduring effort to bring every possible accounting and, when possible, the remains of those who died serving the nation back home.

VFW Post 6538 and its Auxiliary encourage the community to attend the ceremony and join them in remembering those who have not been forgotten.
