GOSHEN – Dozens of people from varying career paths gathered in downtown Goshen Monday to mark Labor Day.

Among the attendees was Stephanie Vandemark, a teacher in Port Jervis, who said unions are important.

“Without labor and these rights and people fighting for them like unions like the Port Jervis Teachers Association and NYSUT, things that I am a member of people wouldn’t have the rights that we have,” she said. “We deserve and we have earned; we don’t want people working in unsafe conditions. We don’t want people not getting paid when they work more hours than they should. So, Labor Day is a day for us to reflect on how far we’ve come and to stand in solidarity with everyone who is part of labor.”

Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894.
