LEOMINSTER — Members of the Fall Brook Elementary School Kindness Club drew colorful chalk creations on the sidewalks to welcome students back for the first day of school.

Hearts, stars, rainbows and suns and were featured in the artwork along with sweet and uplifting messages that read, “Today is going to be a GREAT day!,” “Believe in yourself!” and “You got this!”
This is what greeted the young learners at the city school when they returned to the classrooms on Aug. 31.
Fall Brook fourth grade teachers Rebecca Barnes and Kelly Nelson started the Kindness Club at the end of last school year with their classes. Kids had to fill out a little application and get a teacher to sign off and the “chalk the walk” effort was “the first act of kindness the group has done,” Nelson said.

The Kindness Club will meet during the year “to come up with ideas to bring joy to students and staff,” Fall Brook Elementary School PTO President Kristine Roddy said.
The group is helping fund supplies and T-shirts for the students in the club.
This will include hiding stuff around the building, offering a snack cart during Teacher Appreciation Week, and other ideas. The group currently consists of around 20 students who are now in fifth grade and Nelson said, “things are still in the planning stages.”
“We will be working together to plan missions for this year,” the educator conveyed. “The group You’ve Been Flowered had reached out and gave us the idea of bouquets, which is going to be on our schedule.”
