WARWICK – The Open Space Institute has just purchased 316 acres of woodlands, fields and open space from the Warwick Conference Center to be used by the Town of Warwick as parklands.

Town Supervisor Jesse Dwyer said the property transfer has cost the town nothing.

“Open Space Institute has paid the full amount of just shy of $3.5 million for the 316 acres,” he said. The town has applied for a New York State open space grant of $3.5 million, and if successful, will use the money to purchase the property from OSI.

Eventually the town will be required to reimburse OSI for the land, which would then be transferred to the town.

In an unrelated development, the town has purchased the permanent development rights for the historic Burt Farm, protecting 62 acres of farmland. The town’s Community Preservation Fund and a $323,000 grant from the US Department of Agriculture ensures the land remains in agricultural use and undeveloped for future generations.
