CARMEL- Putnam County legislators hope to reduce the amount of paper used each month from memos and meeting agendas through a wider use of technology.

The nine-member governing body receives hundreds of pages of paper to conduct county business in a manner described as efficient, fiscally responsible, and environmentally conscious.

Current technology allows legislative agendas, resolutions, and supporting documents to be distributed electronically and accessed through the county website and communication systems.

Legislator Tommy Regan of Southeast expressed concern that substantial qualities of paper were routinely being used to reproduce materials previously distributed to the lawmakers and their staff resulting in what Regan called an “unnecessary expense and duplication of effort.”

Regan said reducing repetitive printing would conserve resources, lower costs, lessen environmental impact, and improve administrative efficiency while preserving full access to information.

Legislators agreed to keep printing agenda-item copies for the first committee meeting where each item was formally reviewed. After that, materials will be distributed electronically unless they are revised or amended.
