A Good Samaritan who allegedly saw an SUV strike an e-bike rider from behind and drive away photographed the vehicle’s license plate, helping police locate the SUV.

Carmel Police on Thursday identified the driver as 62-year-old Paulin Prela of Mahopac, who was charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and cited for several other vehicle and traffic law violations including following too closely and unreasonable speed.

Prela was arraigned and released pending future court proceedings.

Lt. Michael Bodo said the unidentified e-bike operator was treated at Putnam Hospital Center for leg and elbow injuries.

Bodo credited the apprehension of the SUV driver to the witness who stopped and snapped a photo of the license plate allowing police to locate the vehicle at a nearby home several hours later.
