BETHEL – Two area lawmakers have teamed up in an effort to repair the Toronto reservoir dam in the Town of Bethel so that water can be brought up to appropriate levels.
State Assemblywoman Paula Kay (D, Rock Hill) and Congressman Josh Riley (D, NY-19) are urging the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and Eagle Creek Hydropower and their parent company, Apollo Global Wealth Management, to start repairs on the dam.
Kay said all parties have been aware of the problem since 2023, yet the company has not authorized initial engineering work to determine next steps while it estimates completion of the work in 2030.
“There is a real safety issue going on at the reservoir. The homes that are there may not be able to be protected by our volunteers, and our volunteer fire departments may also not be safe of they are responding to an emergency out in Toronto,” she said.
Kay said the water level is so low in some areas of the reservoir that they look like dry fields.
Company officials could not be reached for comment on Monday.
