FITCHBURG — The sounds of Latin American chamber music will fill the pavilion at Saima Park on Sunday, Aug. 30, when the Thurston Consort performs as part of Centro Celeste’s URUFEST.

The performance, beginning at noon, will feature the Thurston Consort alongside acclaimed classical and jazz violinist Tomoko Iwamoto as the festival’s guest artist. The ensemble will present a program of chamber music from Latin America, including Estampas Criollas by Uruguayan composer Beatriz Lockhart.

Born in Osaka, Japan, Iwamoto began studying violin at age 6 through the Suzuki method and quickly became one of the most advanced students in her studio. Along with her solo studies, she performed with adult orchestras and chamber ensembles before continuing her musical journey in Tokyo.

While studying electrical engineering at Keio University, Iwamoto also pursued her passion for jazz, playing saxophone and singing in an R&B band. After working as an electrical engineer in Tokyo, she moved to the United States to focus on a career in music.

Iwamoto later studied at Berklee College of Music, where she received the Chairs’ Award. She toured with the Hypnotic Clambake Ensemble and went on to form the jazz string quartet J-Way (formerly Underground String Quartet), creating original compositions and arrangements while performing throughout New England. She has also performed as a soloist with Axis Electric Strings and the Mood Swings Orchestra and created arrangements for young musicians with the Newton All-City Orchestra.

Presented by Centro Celeste, URUFEST invites the community to enjoy “Tarde Espectacular,” an afternoon celebrating Uruguayan culture with music, neighbors and fun.

Saima Park is located at 68 Scott Road.
