DEAR PET TALK: Last week you wrote about the “dog days.” National Dog Day is Wednesday, Aug.26. What are people doing to celebrate?

— Dogs Are Gods

DEAR DOGS ARE GODS: People are definitely celebrating, and not just individuals, but institutions!

Rollstone Bank & Trust welcomes people and their pooches this coming Wednesday. I reached out to Melissa Kuehl, vice president and marketing manager of the bank, who explained, “Like you, we at RBT love our fur friends, so we have to celebrate National Dog Day! Everyone — customers and community members alike — is welcome to stop by our branches with their furry companions for treats, branded bandanas, and a lot of love.”

This will be the second year of this event for Fitchburg-based Rollstone Bank & Trust, which is celebrating its 180th anniversary, one of only three banks in the state established in 1846!

We’ll visit with Sarrju, my therapy dog, to say hello.

And we may continue down the road to Leominster, as Petco honors woman’s and man’s best friend with a variety of events. These include a dog food tasting on Sunday, Aug. 23, and Saturday, Aug. 29, from 2 to 4 p.m. Advertising material promises dog mamas and papas will “learn how to build a better bowl.”

And in a couple of days on Tuesday, Aug. 25, from 6 to 8 p.m., bring your pooch by for a free Pumpkin Pup Cup.

Of course, for some businesses, dogs are always welcome and it’s always their day. Further west, at Westminster’s acclaimed Wachusett Brewing Co., (175 E. State Road, Westminster) you are welcome to bring your dog and enjoy a frosty brew on their patio.

Another local brewery, Thirsty Robot (265 Summer St, Fitchburg, in the back of the building) welcomes dogs with their humans.

So does Clover Road Brewing Co. with two locations at 312 Main St., Hudson, and 151 Main St., Ashland. “Well-behaved leashed dogs” can visit as long as they stay with their group. And Clover Road has also offered “Yappy Hours” to encourage guests to hoist a cold one with their hound. On Aug. 29, from 1 to 5 p.m. the Ashland location offers a “National Dog Day Party,” with “a day of dog-friendly partying, a doggie vendor market, and delicious bites for both dogs and humans!”

I’m sensing a theme, what with the local brewers teaming up to create a good time for “canis lupus familiaris” and their families.

However, what  you may ask — are businesses doing for National Cat Day? Find out on Oct. 29 — and hopefully, we can encourage some folks to celebrate “felis catus” with us!
