NEW YORK – The state troopers who shot and killed a woman who would not lower a gun she was holding when ordered to do so, were justified in opening fire, according to a just-released report from the State Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation.

Police had responded to a domestic incident shortly before 2:30 a.m. on April 12, 2025 at a mobile home in Deerpark for a report of a stabbing. The victim had sustained a laceration to his abdomen.

Nancy Loftus came out of the home when troopers arrived with what appeared to be a gun in her hand.

They repeatedly told her to drop it and put her hands up in the air, which she did not do.

At that point, two troopers at the scene opened fire, but stopped when it seemed as if she had lowered the gun.

The troopers sold the attorney general’s investigators that Loftus raised the gun again, and that’s when they fired again, striking the woman, who was taken to the hospital where she died.

Troopers recovered a pellet gun at the scene.
